Bandai’s New Mecha Anime (& HG Kit!)

Bandai Spirits and Sunrise Beyond are teaming up to create a brand-new mecha anime: Kyoukai Senki. The designs will be brought to the screen by Ken Okuyama Design, lead by Ken Okuyama, of course. Thanks to the collaboration, the anime isn’t all there is to look forward to: we’re also getting a kit!

Edit July 21, 2021: Several upcoming kits from the anime have recently gone up for preorder. See them all here!

In this article:

  1. What is Kyoukai Senki?
  2. The Upcoming Model Kit
  3. Link to Preorder the New HG

What is Kyoukai Senki?

Though we’re not sure about any official English name as of this writing, the Japanese name translates to “Borderline Warriors”.

The story takes place in 2061, with Japan as an underdog in a world war, with the world divided into four ruling blocks. The blocks have turned Japan into a battlefront by deploying humanoid mobile armaments known as AMAIM.

Our main character is Amo Shima, and he’s accompanied by his little AI friend, Gai.

This pair aim to liberate the whole of Japan with a self-constructed AMAIM called Kenbu.

We’ve also gotten a second character, Gashin Tezuka, and a second AMAIM called Jougan introduced. Gashin, a 16-year-old member of the Resistance organization, is accompanied by another I-LeS named Kei. He’s pursuing a mysterious robot called “Ghost” that killed his father.

As an aside, it’s interesting that the studio working on the anime is the same studio that made the animations for the Iron-Blooded Orphans game ‘Urdr-Hunt’. The style is pretty similar, isn’t it?

The Upcoming Model Kit

The kit that has been announced is the Kenbu in a 1/72 scale HG kit that looks like it would be about the same size as a regular HG. In the series lore, the mech looks to be about 8 or 10 meters tall.

We can see some nice color separation and promising articulation (look at those fingers?!). Looking at the art designs, it looks like the elbow and wrist joints are rotating pegs and the arm is just made up of the forearm and the bicep without anything in between.

So far, only the Kenbu has been announced, but we certainly expect to see more kits in the future. Are you as excited as we are?!
