Any chance we’ll get a comparison of the Bandai Arbalest and the Kotobukiya Arbalest? Both are 1/60 scale, but the Bandai one is based off the latest anime incarnation while the Kotobukiya one is older (it was first shown several years ago at one hobby show or another) and is based on the Arbalest’s design from the earlier anime seasons/original novel.

I’m usually not one for these gashapon-type trinkets, but these Pokemon ones (both this and the Poke-ball set a few episodes back) are so colorful and vibrant. I may have to rethink my money-saving strategy…

So I’ve been noticing a trend where you’re shooting your videos at different locations. Some are obviously outside HLJ HQ (like the arcade), but is it safe to assume that the majority of it is at headquarters and you’re low-key giving us all a grand tour of the facility? Because it looks nice, looks like a fun place to work.

Let’s beat this dead horse one last time (I swear). Any chance you can look at the Wave 1/72 VF-4 Lightning III model kit? Word from modelers have said that it builds up very easily and accurately, with minor paintwork necessary.

The FMP Arm Slaves are typically 8-10m tall. Grandaddy Gundam is 18m tall.

The 1/48 Aoshima kits are roughly the same size as if not slightly taller than a MG Granddaddy.

The 1/60 Kotobukiya kit is right around 14-15cm, so around the same height as a tall High Grade (HGBF Miss Sazabi barely beats it in size) or small Master Grade (MG Victory). I’d imagine the Bandai 1/60 kits will be the same.

I hope you compare the Bandai 1/60 Arbalest to the upcoming Kotobukiya kit of the same design. (The Bandai kit is based on the revised design from the new show, whereas the Kotobukiya kit is based on the original design from the light novel and earlier shows.)

I built the older Kotobukiya 1/60 Laevatein (the successor unit to the Arbalest) when it came out and considered it as close to a perfect kit as I had ever built, a distinction that it holds to this day. So obviously my expectations for the upcoming Kotobukiya Arbalest are extremely high.

No. No, you are not reading into it too much. The one thing I’ve learned from the trend of increasingly absurd anime titles is that if it sounds even vaguely like quirky Japanese wordplay, it is.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I do hope you’ll take a look at the new Wave 1/72 VF-4 Lightning III. Surprise surprise, it has turned out to be a snap-build kit (with a surprisingly small number of runners for the price, too, at least from preview indications).

Gundam HG aren’t “bad,” but Bandai do tend to take shortcuts with them that they don’t with other lines, especially nowadays. (You wouldn’t see the hollow parts and shoddy hands of today on their mid-00s to early-10s HGUCs, for instance.)

But generally, attention to scale and detail seems better on their non-Gundam models. Building tends to be more involved, more effort goes into smartly implementing gimmicks like the light-up chest of Gipsy Avenger, etc. Their Star Wars kits have turned out fantastic so far, giving you far greater quality for the buck than a comparable HG/RG.

It seems to me that Bandai’s hobby division tends to put more effort into their non-Gundam kits. Their Star Wars, Macross, Pacific Rim, etc. kits always seem to have this intangible *feeling* of being better kits to build, like more care was put into the design and production.

On the one hand, it makes total sense. Gundam will consistently sell no matter what, so they don’t really need to put as much effort into it, whereas these kits do require more investment. But still, it would be nice if their Gundam HG kits were consistently as good as their Pacific Rim HG kits.

I know I’m gonna sound like a pest, but apparently the upcoming Wave 1/72 VF-4 Lightning III is a snap-build kit… or at least that appears to be the case from some of the recent promo photos. Eh? Ehhhhh? 😀

On another note, does HLJ sell prize figures? Do prize figures sell at retail stores at all, for that matter? Or are they exclusive to coin machines? I’m talking about the ones you find in crane games and the like, a la the recent Toy Tengoku episodes. I’ve been getting into some older Macross Frontier ones recently, and it astounds me that the Japanese trust such high-quality figures to crane games with all the tumbling and the rolling around and whatnot.

That Darth Maul looks pretty slick (but when does he not?). Personally, I’d like to see the MetalGarurumon figure as I grew up on those first two seasons of Digimon, and I’d love to see how well (or poorly) that transformation gimmick works.

But cast my vote for the Ryu Figuarts because I have a feeling he won’t be getting many votes and I wanna root for the underdog. 😛

These new action bases look fairly decent. I like especially that they’ve cut a lot of the bulk and mass of the original 1 and 2, making for a simpler, less cluttered look. The one thing I wish these had is a support beam to keep the lower bar from collapsing onto the base. I doubt the hinge at the base of stand will be able to hold up for very long under significant weight.
