• More painting tests. I’m not liking the blue color I have. The primer looks better actually. I feel like redoing the blue.

I finally found the gunmetal color I like with test 5. I’m going to use that for the inner frame.

Finally added some shin parts to add more armor on the outer side of the legs.

WIP #3 on this week\'s episode of \"This Old Sinanju\" we\'ll be talking about neo-zeon sleeves detail. I use a special technique rather than masking or hand painting. I start with normal sanding and priming, then I paint the entire part the color I want the detail to be (in this case gold). Next I top coat the part and then coat in black enamel. Once the enamel has started to get tacky, I remove the black from the detail with lighter fluid and a cotton swab. This technique is also very good for painting gundam eyes.

    nice clean reverse wash.

Weekend progress: Started scratchbuilding the knee joints, adding details to the thighs and hollowing the inside of the lower legs (so I can make the inner frame for that). Read the descriptions of the photos for more. (^o^)/

I\'ve started to work on the GM strike articulations mods: separated the torso in 2, using micro saws, added a ball joint in the middle from the ballden arms, and started moded the neck and shoulder articulations. For the shoulder i\'ve cut the upper tors to make way to the arms attachments point to go up and down (i have to cove the empty frame now but that something else), and i have achieved what i was going for :)

great way to improve the articulation.

I cut both torsos in half and sandwiched them together with Milliput. The upper chest section was cut away due to the difference in angle between the two kits which left a gaping hole in the middle that was hard to fill.

That is so nice to see. I really appreciate these builds now more than ever since i started modding myself.

  • Small update. Added some suspension parts on the forearm hatch.
  • Last update from this weekend. I got the tubes done on the feet. Planning now where to put them on the chest

Next batch of tests. Since I screwed up the first casting I made, I used the test pieces as paint tests for the cans I have. The satin blue tint can i have seems to work well with the resin. The combination of metal cast and silver pain is what I’m not happy about. I need to find a dark metallic spray paint to get that metallic inner frame i want. Also testing some metal tubing on the leg engine.

Yeah I really want that clear dark and light contrast with frame being gun metal and the armors being flat white and blue. But the frame needs to be metallic since I’m adding a lot of photo-etched parts with varying metals such as copper and silver.

Some more testing work. Here are shots of different metal finishes im able to do in the past. Using shelf spray cans of silver and coating it with metal cast grey can darken the metallic paint a little bit as you can see in the unfinished sazabi I have. I was able to create varying tints of the inner frame. However this dulls the shine significantly. The more I make it darker the lesser it looks metallic. I need to find a way to overcome that.

I like the Crome on the suspension parts but for actual frame parts they need to be a dark metallic coating so I can stay on the qanta theme.

    • I use different grays at base and go,over with satturating drybrush of different metalcolors like chrome, silver and gunmetal. If it comes to create different metal surfaces of an inner frame. For me it feels not natural if it is all shiny like polished chrome.

    • greys… e.g. a neutral grey covered with gunmetal creates a nice iron, while a ghosttgrey plus chrome gives a nice alloy, and so on.

See that is the challenge here. Where I live here in aruba, we don’t have a hobby shop and there are none of these paints! You even have to import the airbrush yourself. Even if you’re able to import the air brush, you still need find the paints which you can’t import since they are prohibited flammable material.

I’m really stuck with finding an off the hardware spray can. And most of them if not all are silver. Silver is to light for this inner frame.

The casted pieces are not yet hard so I can’t really polish them yet. I’ll do that later.

    • Do you polish the clear castings? And I Like the tubing, it gives the model a more real look.

    • If you have an airbrush and can spray lacquer or fume heavy paints then mr.color steel and Alclad steel look nice. Just leave them bare though as even gloss clearcoat can dull their metallic sheen.

Otherwise tamiya gunmetal seems to be the go to spraycan for inner frames for a lot of gunpla modelers.

    • Have you considered just painting the frame a flat dark grey or black with only specific parts silver or metallic grey (like the inside of certain joints, hydraulics, etc)? That can look great when done right too and the light/dark contrast really makes certain parts “pop”.

  • Update time. I tried my hand on resin casting clear parts. It turns out making a mold is not as easy as it seems. I made a few bubbles on the resin and miss aligned cast. Definitely not going to be the last time.

I tested paint on a few parts so I can see the consistency of the air can paints for the metal frame.

Finally modded the feet some more to show that the inner parts of the feet have inner frames showing out while the outside has more armore covering because that’s the most exposed parts on the battle field.

If you can replicate that detail on the suit, then it’s a wonderful homage to takigawas work. Display it with the drawings

I spent some time last night drooling over the RGM-79 Master Archive Mobilesuit book in which the mechanical drawings are so detailed & beautiful, I shall definately be adding panel lines / surface detail based on those illustrations, but, I came to the conclusion that I don\'t want to stress about it being an exact copy of reference artwork, that doesnt interest me - I shall be drawing on them as they are so good but allowing my own creative juices to flow on top and let the kit evolve as I go. That sounds more fun methinks. Speaking of which, I am really enjoying this having this guy on my desk - the last 2 or 3 kits I have built are zakus as working on my first paintjob Marasai was cool to have them on my desk for inspiration but put them in the cabinet and got some GMs out for the sniper build and totally re-kindled my love for these blocky GMs.

Continuing with the hard work the gundam takes form more and more imposing, the design of the wings is already defined. Today I will put leds in the eyes and in all the clear parts I have modified the proportions enough to make it more balanced but I think I will have to enlarge the armor of the waist

Back to work today. I used some runner parts to make a couple of suspension rods for the neck. I also tried to test fit the Qanta shield with the raiser wings. It turned out pretty satisfactory although it needs a few modifications. I like the various configurations I could do with the backpack like swapping the wings created a forward blasting cannon setup. Also tested the buster sword fusion with the qanta blades. A lot more work in the road ahead.

The seven sword comes with a sliding mechanism but the one I’m using is a custom combination of both swords.
