Gundam Takes Over Yokohama

Gundam Port Yokohama, the place in Japan for all things Gundam-related at the Yokohama Bay Area, is celebrating an extension to its area with a limited time event full of exclusive opportunities and fun things to do. There’s so much going on that we can’t possibly cover all of it, but we will highlight some of the coolest things you can do there from now until March 13, 2022.

Ever wanted to see a balloon exhibit of the ‘Last Shooting’ scene from “Mobile Suit Gundam?” To the two of you who screamed “YES,” I have some good news for you! The balloon is 17 meters tall and recreates the iconic scene with special effects involving both video and lighting!

A special projection mapping area is available, too! In the Dockyard Garden, which is designated as an important cultural asset to the amusement landmark, the worlds of “Mobile Suit Gundam” and “Mobile Suit Gundam UC” will be crossed on the starboard and port video walls to create a powerful projection mapping experience for all guests!

More balloons? More balloons. The Freedom Gundam, from the “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” series, appears as a 5-meter tall balloon in the atrium above the Grand Galleria on the first floor.

The interior of the White Base, which appears in the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series multiple times, has come to life — a life-size captain’s seat and control stick are available to look at and, potentially, to interact with. On the wall next to the captain’s seat, images of space and the earth seen from inside the ship is being projected, too. In addition, a 1/144 scaled White Base model is on display, and visitors are able to reel in tons of information about it and even see some videos where the White Base was seen in the series!

There’s so much more to do and see, but we hope this glimpse into what’s available will satisfy some of your curiosity! If you’re able to, take a train down to Yokohama Bay Area and check out the exhibits for yourself in person!
