I’m new to Gunpla. Syd and Ryan are responsible for introducing me to the hobby, so I thought this would be a good place to ask my question about water slide decals.

I just picked up the Epyon Endless Waltz Gundam, and it came with dry transfers and water slide decals.

While building the kit, I attach the decals, as to make it easier for myself. Not having to go back and do them all at once, I thought, would be a good idea.

I was trying to apply the water slides, and I noticed that the paper backing had come off while inside the kit. I didn’t really know what to think about this. Anyways, I tried lining up the paper with the decal as I cut the decal and it just kept coming apart.

I put the decal in warm water for about 30 seconds, and then tried to apply the decal. I’m using Micrsol decal setter, and I applied it to the decal. The decal remained hard.

According to the countless tuts I have watched, the water along with the Micrsol is suppose to melt the decal and help it stick to the plastic. The following morning when I checked the model, the decal remained hard and one had fallen off the kit.

I’m gonna chock this up to user error. So what am I doing wrong? I have bought the products recommended, and followed all the tuts to the best of my understanding.

Not being able to apply the water slide decals is kinda deflating my interest in the hobby, because I believe the kit looks the best when it has all the decals on. Just my opinion.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

    • i have heard of people using microsol but i recomend using tamiya marker softener tamiya is mainly one of the best companys for models plus for ur decals the process is this even if ur not painting just skip the process
      build
      prime
      paint
glosscoat with mr color, tamiya, gloss coat whichever u preferr
      panel line
      decal
      softener on decal
      then flat coat it

    • Hmmm. Okay your problem is that the MG Epyon doesn’t have water decals. It has decals, foils and dry transfers. Dry transfers, you just cut out the one you want, tape it onto where you want it, and rub and then remove when you have everything rubbed. Like using carbon paper. That blue sheet is to protect the decal from coming off the plastic when you don’t want it to.

Water slides are different, they are pretty much melted onto the paper backing.

    • the Epyon kit should not have waterslides included, as Bandai just started putting waterslides in MG kits last year, and only a handful of kits have them right now. Water slides will not have a clear plastic like sheet that they’re attached to, they will be one cohesive decal on a paper backing.

Dry transfers can look good, but they’re not the best type of decal for beginners to use as they can be screwed up VERY easily. Dry transfers have one advantage over waterslides in my opinion though, they’re great for when you’re adding damage to a kit, as you can scrape away parts of the decal without ruining or moving the entire decal around.

    • Doh! As you can see, I wasn’t kidding about being new to the hobby. Thank you for the help!
