I have asked this in a few other places. I also posted it on one of a video I watched on youtube. Forgive me if it is repetative to others:

So for someone who wants to get started in the gunpla hobby, I am a bit overwhelemed as to where to start. I have built and painted models of various sizes, lines and qualities for over 22 years. Most of my time had previously spent with Games Workshop models and kits. I wouldn’t mind some advise on what line(s) are good to focus on. Once I get going, I want all my models to scale and be the right size with each other. is it better to go with the 1/144 HG/RG lines or with the 1/100 MG lines?

    • Many factors apply here, some mobile suits only come in HG, and with your paint skills they could potentially rival mg straight builds in details, hg’s are cheaper while rg’s just have that extra bit of detail that rival mg’s depending on the age.

If you plan on diorama builds hg’s/rg’s are the way to go considering so many variations of the same ms (like the nemo, 3 colors) although that can depend on if you’re going to paint them or not…

Mg’s are bigger, more detailed but less variations since they choose more popular designs (although more than enough zakus!) but are also slightly more difficult to build as a result, same can go for the rg’s apart from size.

Hg’s are initially less detailed but offer some designs not in mg category, plus cheaper, easier to modify…

I’d recommend heading to dalong dot net and check out the categories, mostly straight builds with the odd decal applied and panel lines, I go with what is prettier (hence why i got an extensive mix of mg’s and hgs, although trying to complete some sets have made some difficult choices, hence why I got MG’s of the hyaku shiki and delta plus but hg’s of the delta kai and delta gundam because they don’t have mg versions…)

Short answer:If you have good paint skills hg’s/rgs can top larger sizes and with more variation but larger scales have more detail, check out dalong and see what most of what is out works for you, then stick to it 😉

    • Since you are an experience modeler, there shouldn’t be any problem for you moving to another model field. The only different is Game workshop figures are mainly hand painting, blending with minimum airbrush job. But still do ‘battle damage’ like a military, if I not wrong.

Here’s the different. Usually beginner in building Gunpla model either hand paint, panel lining and flat coat. Moderate builder will start invest in airbrush so they can do different shade of highlight and shadow tone. You might need to prepare an airbrush if you want. Paint wise is almost the same,

Diorama. My opinion is try to adding minimum ‘logic’ into it. Example – a mecha on earth is different a mecha in space. Earth can do battle scar, paint chip, rust, mud, etc. But in space, only oil stain, grease, and it shouldn’t be rusty at all. Hope that help… cheers. 🙂

    • Thanks for the advice thus far. my fav. gundam is the Deathscythe hell Custom. I am going to try and pick up a version or two of that and give it a whirl. I will try a few different kits and see what I like building. I had my mind set on the 1/100 scale, but after seeing the RG 1/144 and just the sheer variety in that scale, I will probably mostly build that size so I can pose and diorama them, plus I think it leave more room for custom builds. Thanks for the painting ideas too. I am more of a Gundam fun, but I highly look forward to building some Zaku as well.

      • On second thought, after seeing the size comparison first-hand now, the MG kits really seem like a better investment overall. Hopefully some of the 1/144 kits I like will eventually hit the MG size. I will still probably get a few 1/144 here and there, but I think I may focus my attentions on the MGs
