I’m in the unfortunate position of being in the UK but not on the mainland. Trying to get back into model building and was looking for a top coat. Specifically I wanted the tamiya ts-80 clear matte as I hear it’s good. But I haven’t been able to find anywhere that will ship it to me. Does anyone know of any decent top coats I can off the shelf in…[Read more]
Hi, go to a supermarket and see if you can find Pledge multi-surface wax. This is the “improved” version of Future/Klear that is on the UK market now. It looks milky white but dries clear and gives a good top coat – can use it for everything that Future is/was used for although I’ve not had good results when used with water slide decals. Are you…[Read more]
So today I was in the WH Smith in the Arndale Centre in Manchester, when I found a Model Zone hidden in the back! A guy in red Model Zone shirt told they are in 10 WH Smith stores and if they’re successful they’ll expand. So if you live near a big WH Smith, it might be worth your time going in to see if they have one. If not, demand one!
I thought they had gone bust , the one i had in ipswich certainly closed a while ago. Not that they ever stocked gundam kits , but certainly good for supplies, and other models.
yeah, that’s what I thought, but it seem WH Smith bought them. There is no way I can afford to buy a kit from them but the paints etc are a really good price.
Modelzone made a huge mistake moving their flagship store in Holborn to the new Westfield Stratford, which i think was a major factor in their demise. However i quite like the new mini Modelzones in WHsmtihs. I’ve been to Kingston, White City and Birmingham and they were all really good with just the right selection of stock for new and existing…[Read more]
had a week at Skegness Butlins with the kids and the mrs last week. Managed to get some gunpla time in the evening 🙂 finished snapping my RG zaku 2 which I still need to line…
Anybody bought kits from Gundammad?
The owner usually runs a stall at the MCM comic-cons (mainly Birmingham) and he usually stocks near enough everything. For example, I bought a RG Freedom for £30 and my friend bought an old HG 78-2 for £15.
To be honest I get the impression they call it gundam mad because his prices are madness. Even getting hit with customs charges, buying from overseas is much cheaper.
My order from HLJ has just arrived and I was wondering if anyone could recommend paints that are easy to find in the UK. The only ones I can find are WarHammer and Humbrol.
Vallejo are excellent paint, and do specific shades either side of the main colour for high and low lights. Think you can even buy sets.
They also make specific thinners for metal paints. And you can use their acrylics with GW paints including the thinners
Cool thanks. I finally got some paints to try out. I’m going to prime with tamiya spray. Then paint the kits with different colours of Vallejo and GW paints.
Good luck. Just don’t forget to thin your paint’s really well. If you are using water, most people recommend about the consistancy of skimmed milk, but it’s a bit of trial and error. Plus you’ll have paint a few coats so have patience with it.
Just as a question when you all buy your kits, if you buy from hobbylink do they charge in yen and you just pay with paypal and it converts straight away close enough to the estimates shown on the site.
in my experience tamiya x-22 thinned and put through an airbrush is a great and inexpensive gloss topcoat. If you want to get fancy, mix a little mars pearl powder in with it for a pearlescent finish.
If any of you go to MCM comic-con in either London or Birmingham then you will know a guy who sells Gunpla there. He may be expensive (I don’t know myself) but you can usually get a small discount if you promote him on facebook.
