Yeah gotta agree with that, the Bradley is a superb build. And the dioramas, well I really enjoyed seeing a French tank in there, it’s so rarely to see them being appreciated, even more a diorama of those years, found it interesting, but I see where you are going.

I understand how hard it must be to judge, after all we have both gundams, land vehicles, planes and ships all competing with each other, and most of the winners rightfully deserve their place, man there are some amazing kits in there, did you see that metal gear? an what to say about Beork’s uh (is it a gundam? looks amazing tho), but yeah some picks do feel out of place, specially without some context.

My main complain is that both the category rules and the of judging criteria seems to be all over the place, and the lack of video really does not help on that behave. Are they looking for a clean build, an interesting one, a complex one? Does scale matters? Does realism matters or just artistic sense?

We’ll have a video a bit later. Because of the volume of entries, judging alone took longer than expected. We focused on judging first to have the results to everyone by Wednesday. Unfortunately, if we had added the video at the same time, results would have been further delayed.

      • That’s great, looking forward for it. Thanks.

      • I think everybody would gladly understand a further delay. Looking st the circumstances. And patience is one of a modellers strength. I really thought Syd would leave after the contest. Never expected him to leaving everything behind and this task to his unprepared colleagues…

        • Anna replied 3 months ago

We had many modellers eager to post their photos online, and didn’t want to keep them waiting any longer, but we will have a video — hopefully within a few days. Though Syd isn’t physically present, he was a preliminary judge for this competition, with Ryan and Todd’s help.

I actually really like the Mosquito, was expecting It to score as the best of intermediate instead of a Bradley. It’s a nice looking, elegant plane and the kit is nice to look at. I am quite surprised it got bumped to advanced tho, mostly due to the category guides.

    • The Breadly is amazing. All detailed and a nice finish. It is a worthy winner. Compare it to the finish of the tank dio at the advanced category…..

      • Yeah gotta agree with that, the Bradley is a superb build. And the dioramas, well I really enjoyed seeing a French tank in there, it’s so rarely to see them being appreciated, even more a diorama of those years, found it interesting, but I see where you are going.

Oh man, it’s like Christmas! After 2 and a half months, Gourai Type 10 is finally painted and ready, and not a moment too soon! Without further ado, I present to you my final entry for the Playing With Plamo contest! Name: Aaron Yelensky Kit: Frame Arms Girl Gourai Type 10 The second hand-painting I tried turned out looking like crap, so I stripped it (again) without bothering to take pics and switched to spray paint. Luckily, Tamiya has JGSDF colors in spray can form as well. That worked way better, and the masking solution didn’t dissolve the spray paint, of course! I can’t help but admire her as my first ever painted model, but I’m still not entirely satisfied with how everything ended up – someone suggested using Future floor polish to prep surfaces for decals, but it ended up creating some undesired texture around the decals, so I think I’ll try something else next time. I also sprayed the skin parts with matte Mr. Topcoat and the armor parts with one coat of matte and one coat of semi-gloss. Her skin parts turned out great, but I think I’ll stick with just matte for the armor next time. I did try panel lining with a grey gundam marker, but it was too dark and looked odd, so I used a mechanical pencil instead. Still, all things considered, I’m really proud of her! I ended up painting part of her Freestyle Bazooka silver before adding the camouflage this time, and I’m especially happy with how that came out. She has PROPER Type 10 tank camouflage now, and she really looks like she’s ready to go and join the JGSDF now! That, or go and do battle with the other Frame Arms Girls! Between 3 paintings, 2 paint strippings, and lots of (costly ;_;) trial and error, I learned so much, and I can say with confidence that deciding to enter this competition and painting Gourai was totally worth it no matter what the outcome is. Of course, I think I’ll be buying an actual airbrush before I try painting again.

Excellent! I’ll take all that into account. Thanks man.
It’s pretty cool she is modeled around the JGSDF’s MBT, painted on JGSDF camo and wields their issued assault rifle, great work!

Final Submission done. I wanted to make a comment on the color bits around my kit. I painted the kit fuel drums on bright colors to represent those were civilian drums they had no time to paint, similar happens with the green boxes and wheels, those would be spare parts still in their original factory color. The red storage box on the right side of the turret is something I have seen in photos, were the crew paints part of the tank to represent the Red-White-Green of the Syrian flag, I thought it was really interesting and really wanted to show it on my kit. That’s it, hope you guys find the setup interesting, cheers and best of luck!

Thanks! Really happy with the way it turned out.
Being a 1/72 kit it is rather small (hull is about 95mm long) and I wouldn’t be able to put the level of detail on it for me to be confident for the advanced category. I would definitely consider trying doing diorama, or maybe a 1/35 kit next time, although I have never done one.

It definitely looks great. Noted all, it would be my first articulated kit so all the tips help, I usually build military vehicles, but her smugness was too much to ignore and decided to give it a try, also got a pair of little armory AKs, they are compatible right?
Any recommendations for using Mr. Topcoat, I am getting the same one ASAP, the finish looks damn good.

Did you paint the skin parts or only top-coated them? Waiting for my Innocentia to arrive but I am really afraid to painting skin and yours looks perfect.

Some more progress on the Idolm@ster Su-33, but in all likelyhood not gonna make it to the finish line. First here is are the wingtip rails, these are ones I detailed and then made copies of, compared to the original kit parts. Then here\'s the fuselage primed. As I feared when I first laid eyes on the kit long time ago, the recessed panel lines and rivets are sharp, but very fine and shallow, guessing they\'d be easily covered/filled with a few layers of paint. Well, a single layer of white primer was enough to clog them. :( By the time it has the white/base coat, pearl bands and stars, clear coat, decals, and more clear coat there wouldn\'t be any recess detail left. Curiously the hasegawa Su-35S which was released later than the original su-33 kit and which both share some of the sprues has deeper/wider recessed detail to account for this :/ So comes the time consuming but careful process of rescribing/deepening all the recess detail and fixing any slips of the scriber and after a couple of days, I\'m barely halfway. In the end all in all it will push the timeframe beyond the death line. People will argue, but you\'d saved time if you cut corners or did this or that. But 1) It\'s a contest, half-assed not gonna win you anything. 2) I\'ve seen some builds and without a smooth, consistent white base, the white decals aren\'t completely opaque and there\'s color bleeding of them and the girl decals (Hoshii Miki) you apply on top. 3) I\'d rather not finish than rushing it again half-assed, ending up ruining something along the way maybe the model, the paintwork or the decals taking into account these idolm@ster limited edition kits are already discontinued and most are sold out.

Hope we get to see that Su-33 finished, that setup looks really interesting.

Been away for a bit. I love me some Zero. With this one I wanted to try a dif paint job than the usual and remembered something somewhere about maybe the early A6Ms on the carrier Zuikaku having a more tan tone. So I pre-shaded and shot it a light tan. Maybe a little too tan. So I hit it again with a lighter tan. Hmmm. It looked great when I tested the colors first, but on the actual model... The this is, it\'s really starting to grow on me. So I pushed ahead with the build. Two white stripes for the Zuikaku 1941 flight group. Added brake lines to the landing gear. The stripes and red hinomarus are painted on.

Topside of airframe further weathered. Streaking mostly. Forward fuselage cannon plate weathered. Might\'ve overdone weathering the exhausts. All pylons & intake vents installed. Now after reviewing all my reference photos of the actual Flanker D, I\'ve come to conclusion that the bird is semi-gloss or gloss. I wanted to do flat. So semi it is. Top cat out.

Looks amazing! Specially love the weathering on the gun.
