    Gday all.

I have a MG X10A Freedom (my 1st gunpla build ever) and it ran into a problem.
When I got it, after washing the sprues, the first thing I did was to ‘protect it’ with Tamiya Semi-Gloss (TS-79).

That’s where, I believe, the problems began.

I was using the gundam panel liner pens to do panel lines, however, the pens died really quickly. I eventually realised that this was (most likely) to the semi-gloss coat gumming up the pen-tip.
To fix this I did my panel lining with a 0.2mm mechanical pencil, which actually turned out great!!
    HOWEVER,
When I finished the model and tested putting a topcoat of Tamiya Semi-Gloss (TS-79) on, it seemed to ‘dissolve’ the pencil panel lining and cause the acrylic gundam-marker paint to run.
So I left it the way it was without decaling… and it bugs me. I want to put water decals on it and protect it with the Taniya Semi-Gloss (TS-79)

So, what have I done wrong here? Have I:
    – Mixed lacquer semi-gloss with acrylic/pencil detailing and it just WONT work?
    – Is this actually OK and im just spraying too close or too thick?
    – If I do add water decals, will the TS-79 semi-gloss destroy them?

    Advice much appreciated!
PS. Advice for Newbies: Don’t pre-spray your model to ‘protect’ it before construction and detailing like I did. Do it after!

    • the problem isn’t actually that you sprayed the semi-gloss it’s that you didn’t let it fully cure, it may have seemed dry but that’s not good enough and that’s why it clogged your panel liner.

now then the pencil lining can work aswell what you should do if you’re gonna spray a top coat over that is to do light quick sprays at a bit of a distance so that the clear coat seems just about dry even as it hits the kit, do that for a bit and the pencil won’t have a chance to run and once the paint is dry it’ll seal it in and you can do a full coat over that to get the final finish you want.

also you can spray your topcoat over the decals and really you should to protect them but once again make sure the decal is properly dried.

oh and as for the paint cure time a full day is actually recommended and that varies based on your climate

and one final thing the panel liner will run aswell if you spray too much topcoat over it or spray it too soon, so once again just like the pencil you want to do a light coat to seal it first before going for your final finish.

      • Funny thing is I let it sit for a full day before starting construction. I build my gunpla very slowly so I take time and get every piece right. Even after 2-weeks in, the tips on my gundam panel liner pens were failing (by then I had completed the head and torso)…

Cheers for the info that with enough spray-distance, the semi-gloss should still be good for the painting details, decals and panel lines!

        • no problem and not just the distance make sure you don’t lay the paint on too thick all at once, just a light misting really, just make sure that it’s not thick enough to run mostly.

as for the tips well not sure why you’re having so much problems if that’s the case but what I’ve sometimes done is dip the tip into some paint thinner and rub it on a tissue and with a bit of luck it’ll restore your liner.
