Hello everyone, glad to see some forum faces. Just wanted to drop an update while checking things out. I have not had much time lately to build and paint, but I have been able to get a bit done with the WingZero. I have had quite a time with trying different primers and have decided to give up on any acrylic based primers. They never sprayed quite right, the texture wasn’t uniform, and it scratched easier than using tamiya on bare plastic. Next attempt will be from either Mr Surfacer or Alclad, if anyone has anything to weigh in on either brand. Fortunately, I have a nice backlog forming. I have a PG GP01, Sazabi and Nu Gundam Ver Ka, an Epyon, some Age suits that were on sale as well… This should be a fun year. Hope to see everyone and their kits at the forums soon.

    • I love that color scheme you went with for the Wing Zero. It looks so darn good with the contrast between the gold, silver, and black.

    • The colors you have have put on the Wing Zero looks absolutely perfect for it. I love them, very nice job man.

    • I was mostly Mr. Surfacer and they do hold up much better but the most important thing is to wash you parts after de-nubbing and sanding before putting on the primer coat. Also make sure to wash your hands before putting them on sticks if you have sweaty hands like me.

    • Very nice color scheme on the WZC. Gives off a somber impression. I can already see the whole thing looking really really nice.

Regarding primer, I’ve been using Mr. Surfacer exclusively this year (Surfacer 1200 and 500) and they’re great. Thin them at 1:1 or 1:1.5 with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner and they spray beautifully. You can use standard lacquer thinner too and normal Mr. Color Thinner.

    • Thank you all for the compliments. It took awhile to decide how much color besides silver to add, and I still cannot decide whether I want the wings black, silver, gold or white…

I’m thinking I’ll definitely go with Mr. Thinner, don’t hear anything much about alclad in the gundam side of kits. I don’t wash kits, but I have started to use disposable rubber gloves. I’ll try washing half the kit next time to see if it makes a difference for me. As far as the Mr Surfacer, when would you be using the 500 thickness?

      • Yeah, I don’t hear about Alclad primer much when it comes to gunpla. Alclad metallics are the bomb, though.

Washing the parts….I don’t know, I feel it’s a bit needed just so you can get rid of any dust and fingerprints. It’s not necessary by any means, but it’s one of those things that can only help. I don’t soak mine anymore. I find a quick wash and scrub with a hard toothbrush and dishwashing soap does the same thing.

Mr. Surfacer 500 can be used as normal primer, but many people (myself included) tend to use it for creating textures and filling gaps/scratches.

        • Their finishes definitely stand out, I agree. I thought the 500 was more for filling, just wasn’t sure if I was missing out on any tricks. Always something new to learn.

I finished the WingZero, just need to paint a few small details and decide on the color of the wings. It barely stands on its own, it has next to no articulation, and none of the pieces wanted to fit right. It has to the most poorly designed model I have assembled as of yet, but the wings and the shoulder armor make it worth it. All said and done, one of the nicest looking display models.
