So for this update on my MG Sandrock, I’m doing something pretty unique.
In keeping with the rocky/stony/desert theme of this kit, I thought it might be cool to make the forehead camera look like opal (a precious gem stone found in deserts).
To achieve this effect, I started by mixing a custom color with Testors brand Blue Metal Flake and French Blue.
I thinned it down quite substantially and applied it with a medium strength spray to help preserve the translucency.
Then came the special part; Alclad II Spectral Chrome. Even just a light coat of this on a dark, glossy surface will show the holographic effect quite well in sunlight.
I’ve included a side-by-side picture attempting to show the effect in action.
I also did this for the clear part that goes with the shield, but with one difference; I painted the “eyes” with Alclad II Gloss Black Base, to mimic the look of obsidian (black volcanic glass).
Sandrock’s shield is designed like the head of a snake, and seeing as many snakes have glossy black eyes, I figured that would be rather fitting and wouldn’t clash too much with the other colors either.
After that, I filled the seam line on the head (same way I did for the chest), and masked it off for primer and paint.
