Well, time for another WIP update. First off, here is the Decal sheet i will use if it is permitted, I would appreciate some definitive clarity on whether partially used decal sheets are acceptable or not, as the rules seem to state that partially completed model kits are not, so curious as to whether this rule also applies to decal sheets as well. Any ways, I digress. Here is the Decal sheet (it is the 1/144 Gundam 00 scale AEU, Union and HRL decal selection, i’ll only be using the warning signs etc), and an update on the kit itself.

    • I’m sure you can use custom decals you ordered anywhere else (samueldecal comes to mind which I’ll be using), decals from some other kit, partial decals or no decals at all. How you do your model is your own way. As long as you don’t use garage parts such as bootleg resin parts, weapons etc. From what I understand, they don’t want to promote model building “piracy” and support for sale of bootleg manufactured parts.

      • that’s certainly fair. good thing my decal sheet is officially produced by bandai then. 🙂

        • Mine won’t use these. 😀 Custom printed decals are sort of a final touch thing and I like to look at them the same way I look at paint. You can print your own on a printer at home. If that wouldn’t be permitted then I think there would be a rule using only Mr-Hobby paints or something like that. And that won’t happen.

          • What kind of ink would be needed for such a thing? Interested now that you brought it up, but not for this competition. Some custom decals would be nice for my older kits.

            • From what I’ve seen, some use more or less regular standard inkjet printer with a bit higher resolution. In other words, good inkjets. All you’d need is a sheet of waterslide decal and you’re set. However, I have never tried this myself and probably never will as samueldecal does a good job at it for 5-10$ + some 2 more for shipping and they’re just a click away. Saves a lot of time and unneeded stress with decals that I’d print myself, as it may turn out bad to say the least. http://old.samueldecal.com/ here’s a link for you. I do think they offer services of printing whatever you want, at a price. However, don’t hold my word for it. There’s a link where you can ask, order and just get info about everything they have in store for your needs.

              • I might just wait until I can eventually afford to buy a 3D printer at the same time. Scratch building’s a pain for me, so I’ll be patient until the day that the $300 printers are actually up to par with commercial ones.

                • That would be a dream come true… And the day HLJ will go out of work for sure. 2 years after that they’re going to sell kits on a USB stick. “Sinanju 3.0! Download now!”

                  • That’s my only fear with 3D printers. I wouldn’t want to put businesses like HLJ out of a job, especially since there’s just a special magic when going into a hobby store.

As a side note, I’d probably only use a 3D printer for custom parts and a 1/100 Bertigo. Bandai, why do you hate Gundam X so much? D:

                    • They hated SEED too! It took them 10 years to “MGnize” other SEED kits, other than the Strike and Freedom. About HLJ going out of business, it won’t happen. They’ll just sell kits in a different packaging. And a lot smaller too. 🙂 Ofcourse, not everyone will have a 3D printer at home so standard plastic model building won’t die for a bit longer. As if it’s not dead already… :\

                      • The problem with X is that we haven’t seen any MG treatment in 18 years. I’m wondering if they’re using the action figures as a gauge for the popularity of the series.

Yeah, all my local hobby stores don’t carry any Gunpla. Worst yet, the closest place that has any Gunpla sells HGs for $70 and MGs for $200 without tax applied yet. It’s criminal!

                        • Good lord, that’s extortion! 🙁

                          • Agreed! You can buy two HG kits and three and a half MG kits for that money and have it delivered to you.

                        • The only way to get them from a New Zealand store is a few online companies who charge twice the price AND twice the freight within NZ as HLJ! Bastards! Then they put them on sale, was $149, now only $120…..for a kit I can get landed in NZ for $70 from HLJ!

                          • Haha, I know that feeling. That’s why I tend to not get stuff from GG Infinite and other U.S. stores.

              • You can certainly print your own decals on an inkjet or laser printer if you have the right decal paper for the job… But there are limitations.
For instance: most printers can’t print white – because they don’t need to, they’re usually printing onto white paper. So if you print almost anything other than black on clear decal film, the decal’s probably going to be translucent.
The cheap way around that is to print on opaque white decal paper – but that means your decals won’t have any transparent areas unless you cut them out yourself.
What places like Samuel Decal do is they use an Alps printer – which is capable of printing white ink (along with other special inks like metallics, etc.) onto transparency. These printers are long-since discontinued, and the process of printing good decals with them isn’t entirely straightforward – so most people don’t go to the trouble of buying an Alps, they just buy decals from someone who owns one. 🙂

                • You can make some pretty good decal on ink jet and laser printers. Except for the white issue. Some people just include a bit of white decal to put under the clear part that needs to be white. If you do make your own you need to seal them or the ink will run.

      • Yup, that’s what they said in their official video. By the way, Howell, are you going to perhaps swap out the hands for RG or maybe Hobby Base hands? I feel as though the Astray kits need that extra push to show the, “Come at me, bro!” type of expression.

        • actually, I’m waiting for a shipment of MS builders parts to arrive from HLJ, which i will be incorporating into the build. THis shipment includes the system weapons 004, for the sniper rifle and the EFSF small hands to hold it, Since i’m basing the look of this build (kind of, its actually more like a sleek update of) the GM snipers from the 08th MS team. But i know what you mean about the intimidation factor, but i think in this case it would be more of a “hit me, i dare you!” scenario 😀

          • I’m looking forward to it, man. 😀 I re-watched the 08th MS team OVA just a few weeks ago, and I’ll be darned to see if someone doesn’t win a prize with that sort of theme.

            • Haha, you flatter me. But, Winning a prize is plying second fiddle here. I just want to complete a good looking kit, with a little homage to one of Universal Century’s more well known MS teams. I certainly hope i don’t disappoint.

Although winning a prize would be nice 🙂

              • Hmm, I meant ‘playing’.

                • I’ll be honest: I’m a huge fan of the UC, more so than most other lines because of the reality it brings. The stories are richer (well, so is the amount of OVAs to go along with it), and realistic colors just add something extra to the table. 🙂

                  • that is the truly truthful truth there, in text for all to see. Universal century is definitely my favourite of the multi-verses, although i’m still open to the others. except AGE. seriously. why, sunrise? WHY? Still, I digress. Yes, UC certainly brings a level of realism to the table that you don’t see in alot of other gundam series.

                    • You’d be surprised about AGE. It took me five tries to get past the first few episodes, but the story’s actually pretty deep. I’d even argue that it’s better than SEED’s story line.

                      • yeah, i know it is. i’m on my fourth try currently. Just finished episode 22. What my problem with it is just how formulaic it is. i mean, that does seem quite arbitrary, considering it is Gundam here we’re talking about. But, at least with other shows, they remained unpredictable, to some degree. An example of what i mean with AGE is, well, take the character Yurin for example. She appeared in, what, ep 2? the second she did, i said : “It’s Lalah Sune. She’s dead already.” about 11-12 episodes later, Yurin died. In almost exactly the same way Lalah did. and the entire series so far has been been nothing but correct predictions on my part. I mean, i want to like AGE, i really do, and i will finish it(eventually). But i find it quite difficult to emotionally invest in a show that lacks any sense of mystery in it’s plot.

                        • Haha! You know what’s funny? I was thinking that exact same thing – Lalah Sune and Yuri. For me, the turning point was the end of Asemu’s arc and into Kio’s arc.

I will admit that it’s really, REALLY hard to appreciate it with the first few tries.
