Though it also probably means that any chance you had of winning the prize has been shot to hell…
I mean, imagine you enter in intermediate, and happen to be good enough to win at that level… But then the judges say, “Turns out you’re an advanced modeler” and shove you over there. You may not even be a contender in that category… The whole idea of a contest is that people who are good at modeling should have a better chance of winning: but a tiered system like this penalizes you if you’re not good enough to win one level, but too good to remain in the level below it.
Some people are in this mainly to win a prize – and that being the case, they need to be careful of how certain possibilities may alter their chances of winning. I have different priorities, personally, but there’s nothing wrong with playing to win. (But, man, you wouldn’t know that from kids’ TV shows these days…)
You can get bumped up or down, but we usually don’t.
