I was wondering if anyone could shed some light into my doubt here about painting gunpla.

From the hobbylink tv episode I know that if I use acrylic(water based) paint as base paint, I can’t use lacquer paint on top of it without any coating, I think this goes as well as enamel, coz it will ruin the acrylic paint.

My question is if I were to use lacquer as base paint, then I use enamel for panel wash, will the lacquer paint goes off when I use enamel thinner to clean the enamel wash?
*There is no coating over the lacquer paint.

    • You can use lacquer top coat on acrylic paint but there is a trick to it. You have to do a very light mist coats 3 times before you put it on normal coat. Dont go to heavy on the last coat. Alow 20 to 30 mins between coats. When your doing mist coats dont hold down the button. Push release push release. I do this all the time because they dont sell Mr hobby top coat around me I use Model Masters shake can.

      • Does the panel wash technique still works? I mean with so many layers of primer, paint, top coat? does even the panel line still there? I fear that with so many layers the panel line actually vanish. That why I been thinking using lacquer as base. Since im in a tropical country, I doesn’t really need a fast dry paint.

        • With Gundam kits, you could dip the thing in chocolate and you’d still have panel lines. 🙂 (Panel lines on most Bandai kits are MASSIVE.)
But more generally, yes, panel lines will still exist after multiple layers of paint as long as you don’t lay it on too thick.

          • Point taken on the panel line subject. Thanks
How about Enamel wash over lacquer paint? if this work, I don’t really need to do coating on the acrylic paint, which will save cost.

            • it goes like this Lacquer>enamel>acrylic. in other words you can use enamel or acrylic over lacquer but not the other way around. as for using the enamel thinner to remove the enamel paint without damaging the lacquer underneath, if the lacquer was cured properly before you did the enamel then things should be fine but don’t overdo it or it may still damage the lacquer.

    • Use zippo lighter fluid when doing pannel wash not enamal thinner its easer to clean up and wont eat through paint of any kind

    • The enamal thinner smells worse

    • I air brush my kits so I dont use prime the layers are very thin. For me I do paint detail paint work then gloss top coat water slide decals or stickers then flat topcoat.

    • Best advice I have ever receved when it come to modeling and painting came from the old guys at my local hobby shop. Those guys have been doing this for years and know what works and what dose’nt. don’t be afrad to at your local shop you will make friends with a vast experience in this.

      • Believe me when I said I already tried all local store at my area. Apparently no old guys at my area XD.

Some people love to keep the knowledge to themselves. most of them advice me to try out myself… well, is not like I don’t want to try out my self, to start a paint set, I have to buy set of color and thinner, those Tamiya thinner/mr.thinner aint cheap. If it doesn’t work, what I got to do with those paint and thinner?
