To be fair, we all gotta start somewhere… But you don’t learn to paint models by not painting models…

    • Well I have to say, not everyone paints their Gundams… 🙂 I do minor touch ups but I dun have the equipment, time nor inclination to do wholesale painting. I started modelling in the days where kits only come in white or grey… so to me, Bandai’s colourful runners are heaven sent! Less for me to do… LOL…

      • I know not everyone paints their gundams… that’s the whole point. 🙂 People post unpainted kits all the time, and mostly I just have to remind myself “If you don’t have anything nice to say…” – or else I start making people angry at me.
You can do a lot with a pre-colored kit without putting full color coats on it, of course. Not my cup of tea but it can be done. But one thing you can’t do is hide seam lines. And, yes, they still exist, even on Bandai kits.
I started on non-color-molded kits as well and to me painting’s just part of the process. It’s the part of the process where the kit stops looking like a piece of plastic and starts looking awesome.
I know not everybody sees it my way – but to me a kit just isn’t finished unless it’s painted. I love that I can make some seriously cool things in this hobby. When somebody doesn’t take the time to make a model look good, and doesn’t want to take the time to make it look good… That always just shocks me. It’s a part of this culture that I just can’t relate to, and it’s hard sometimes to even articulate why it bothers me so much.

        • @tetsujin Simple. The answer is time… or rather a lack there of. I can’t speak for everyone but for myself i travel quite a distance to and from work. I reach home at 8pm and have to deal with my kids (that’s another reason) and by the time they are asleep it’s 10pm. Do you have kids? They zap the energy out of you fast! I simply do not have the time to build it to the level that you do. So there are many reasons why not everyone builds a kit like you do. I do wish i could build like you… i see a lot of awesome entries in the Gunpla Builders World Cup that simply amazes me. But I know it takes months and sometimes years to build them and i just don’t have the time to do that. But of cos there are different levels in everything. If everyone could cook like a Michelin chef, then there probably won’t be such a thing as a Michelin chef cos everyone can do it. So continue to do what you do and let us admire your work, but don’t be “shocked” that ppl like me cannot/do not/will not take a few months to build a Gundam cos there are tons of reasons. Think of it this way… if everyone builds a very cool, full painted, fully modded Gundam, then no one would be admiring your work :D. LOL. Keep up the good work, man.

          • Hey, my responses disappeared. That’s no fun.
What bothers me most of all is this attitude of “I can’t do it and I don’t want to try.” When I make a cool model the last thing I want to see as a response is “I could never do that.” I’d rather think that the fact that I could do it means that other people could do it, too…
I’m not talking about GBWC-winning models here, I’m just talking about enough attention to make them look good. That pretty much does mean a paint job IMO. This is basic, basic stuff. It’s not that hard, or expensive, or time consuming….

            • Yea I guess the difference comes down to what we define as “time-consuming”… I think to sand down, putty the seamlines, spray paint, apply decals, topcoat, etc… is time consuming. Maybe cos I dun have enough time and I don’t wanna take weeks or months to complete a kit. You may want to and I respect the effort for that. Just don’t get bothered that not everyone puts into the hours to refine their kits. Accept that some modellers like me are satisfied with some kind of effort made with gunpla paint markers. Lazy, but gets some form of painting done but within our time constraints. Everyone is different and builds their own kits in their own way.

              • Very well said @philliptan i myself is a straight builder. I usually dont mind using the foil stickers that came with my kits,. Honestly, I dont have the skills to paint. So what I do is try to choose a kit that has good color separations and also the color of the plastic parts. I watch reviews before I buy so I would know if there are a lot or less parts that require painting. Most of the time I go for MGs. It has very minimal parts that needs painting especially the ones that are newly released. I also wanted to try painting a kit but it is not going to happen any time sooner. For me a lot of planning to be done before I start including having some budget for the tools and paints. I always admire those who paint their kits and shares them to others, it gives me more interest to the hobby. 🙂
