i `m guessing its the dark green color putty ? was given a tip saying that you can use paint thinner to thin it down.

Yep you can thin it down with cellulose thinners to make a good Mr Surfacer equivalent.

I use denatured alcohol and it works great. I mix up a big batch and keep it in a Tamiya paint jar.
