most panel lining is done with acrylic paints, ie the gundam markers, so as long as you use an acrylic top coat you will be perfectly fine.
that being said you can use other top coats theres just more of a risk it will eat the panel lines,
the trick is thin layers, most people are over the kit by the time its top coat time and just do one (usually thick) coat, if you do multiple thinner coats not only can you fine tune the resulting finish to the kit but the risk of damaging panel lines or decals etc is minimal
