Living in Christchurch, New Zealand I volunteer some weekends Flag Marshalling at Ruapuna Motorsport Park. Kenny Smith, a well known 76 year old Formula 5000 purchased one of the CG901Bs from a private dealer and brought it to New Zealand. My fascination has been huge with this car and seeing it in person was pretty darn cool. Last weekend we had the Skope Classic Car meeting and I caught up with Kenny and got his autograph for the base of the model.
The base is Trumpeter used for 1/24 kits, but just fits snugly enough for 1/20 F1s. The base was undercoated with PPG automotive primer and sanded. Next came Tamiya Park Green for a few coats. Once dried, i added my special decals I’ve been doing myself lately. All my decals prior to building are scanned and if any errors occur i can print off a new section. Bit of a game changer and avoids the frustration of losing a decal. Both ‘BP’ and ‘Leyton House’ logo decals, in this case are from the internet with some use of photoshop, a bit of water, microscale, drying and then a number of coats of Tamiya Clear Gloss. Lastly of course was Kenny Smith’s autograph which I got on track day.
Previously building this kit I always found the external part of the monocoque a pain as it requires the seam to be filled and sanded. Previous use of filler never seemed to have worked as before painting it, it would crack under sanding. Using cement this time I found the ordeal a little easier and created a good bond before applying auto-primer and paint.
I purchased skunk decals incase the tamiya decals which have been exposed since the 90s would crack and crumble when hitting the water for extraction. So far the process has been easy and the decals have been in fabulous condition considering the age. New Studio27 decals and photo etch parts (used already for brake disks and rear spoiler) are truly amazing and will complement the finished kit.
