Gunpla TV Special – Gundam Competition – The Winners!

Best Of The Best

Prize: 1/100 MG PMX-003 THE-O

There were so many high-quality entries to this competition that deciding which model would win the top prize was a difficult and lengthy process.  Anthony’s diorama came out the winner thanks to the amazingly realistic details he produced.  The water looks like real water.  How did he do it?  The reeds around the edge, the debris near the Zaku head,  the rocky embankment, and the wear and tear on the Zaku itself are flawless in their construction and placement.  The people wandering onto the scene and discovering the Zaku are believable in their poses and positions.

Congratulations, Anthony!  Truly this is an outstanding work. Hard to believe it’s a plastic model!

Straight Build Winners

1st Prize: 1/100 MG V Dash Gundam Ver. Ka

Zhi takes top prize in the Straight Build Category with his fantastic MG Blue Frame 2nd Revise.  The markings and panel lining are flawless and the poses he used when photographing this kit not only show off those details but also the Mobile Suit’s ‘attitude’.

2nd Prize: 1/144 RG RX-78-2 Gundam

Vincent’s MG Strike Noir really caught our attention and shows just what a Bandai Master Grade straight-built kit is capable of.  Excellent choice of pose, as well.

Modification Winners

1st Prize: 1/100 MG V Dash Gundam Ver. Ka

MatX dubbed his creation the Ice Queen and one look at the model tells you that title is appropriate.  This kit looks composed, cold, and callous, and also amazing!  So many modifications, alterations, and customizations (scratch-built hands!) went into this piece that the vote for first prize was nearly unanimous across the board.

2nd Prize: 1/144 RG RX-78-2 Gundam

Hadi shows what model magic can be done with a 1/144 HG kit with his ‘Phantom Flag’.  As if the Overflag itself wasn’t impressive enough check out the work done on that pack.  Additional panel-lines and scratch-built weapons on the legs really make this Phantom Flag soar.

Diorama Winners

1st Prize: 1/100 MG V Dash Gundam Ver. Ka

There is just so much going on in this piece that it is often difficult to decide where to set your eyes.  The MG Infinite Justice, with scratch-built backpack, alone is a tremendous work but then you start to take in the hundreds of little details found throughout this diorama.  Don informed us that he used four different kits in the construction of the diorama and then there is everything else on top of that.  So much to take in!

2nd Prize: 1/144 RG RX-78-2 Gundam

Francesco of Italy submitted what is probably the most original entry to this competition.  A 1/100 scale MG RX-78-2 Gundam sitting at his work desk in his room working on, as you can see for yourself, plastic models!  Almost everything you see in the picture is scratch-built, including the airbrush! And waste basket! And floor!  Incredible!

Video Winners

1st Prize: 1/100 MG PMX-003 THE-O

Desktop Arena by John Huang

This video really shows how versatile Gundam model kits are and the fun you can have with them.  The story-line and dialogue are well thought out and very amusing.  This video will continue to be viewed for some time to come.

The creator of this video will be submitting an article to hobbylink.tv so stay tuned for that!

2nd Prize: 1/144 RG RX-78-2 Gundam

The choreography for this video is really well done and you can tell this little Gundam loves busting moves to his favorite song.  Great job!

Thanks to everyone who participated and made the first Playing with Plastic competition on Hobbylink.tv a success.  You can see the rest of the submissions below.  Take your time to enjoy the many Gunpla pics and leave us a comment letting us know what you think.

  2. Maybe you could organize the gallery by category? It would be nice if it were easier to look at the other competitors in “Modifications”, for instance.
Great work, everybody, and congratulations to the winners!

    • Thanks everyone for your comments.

The gallery has been grouped in the following order “Diorama”, “Modifications” and “Straight builds”.
This can be easily seen as each photo has the class they entered followed by the entrants name.
The photos were then grouped into their classes within the gallery.

  12. The competition for the straight build is pretty tough, no wonder i didn’t manage to win. Perhaps next time Grade category should be considered next time.

  14. I know I didn’t win (to be fair, I wasn’t expecting my simple little HGUC Zaku I to win) but I’d still like to know when we’re going to get those 10 percent off vouchers.

I want me a slightly cheaper Harute! 😛

  17. truly stunning work, especially the ‘Gundam building Gundam’…but I have one niggle about the ‘Best of the Best’ winner, and that is that the idea for that diorama has been done before, and I might add better, by someone else. So on that reason alone, it doesn’t deserve to be a winner imo!!! Take a look at Michael Fichenmayer’s work and you will notice the similarities instantly. Link is below

    • @ Dave I would agree that both diorama’s are quite similar and both high quality. But Michael did not enter our contest so his work could not of affected the winner of the “Best of the Best” category.

  18. @ Luke Yes you’re right, and I couldn’t of expected the judges to have known about Fichenmayer’s work before or after judging. Both are excellent pieces of work no doubt, but I wonder if Anthony (the winner of this comp) had seen Fichenmayer’s work. Of course we’d never know…but hey I’m sure you get my point. btw are you one of the judges?
