Ok What the hell is it now?!

I’m so happy; my local Barnes and Noble finally started stocking Gunpla! I got a MG Deathscythe Hell EW, a MG Proto Zero, and, most importantly, a HG Wing Gundam Fenice. Today was a good day. 🙂

    • what… What state or country do you live in!! My local barnes and nobles don’t even do that!!!

      • The US. Over 400 B&N stores are supposed to carry them by the end of April. Mine just got them in this past week. Check yours. There’s only 600 or so B&N left, so there’s a good chance yours might get them too.

So is anyone else getting the database errors again? I can’t even login.

Painted a few more parts last night. I got home late and didn’t have much time but I got the gold parts painted and I painted the thrusters with a gloss black base coat. Tonight I’m hoping to get a layer of Future onto the gold parts and possibly the frame parts as well. Might paint the 100% black parts while I’m at it.
    • That’s a nice shade of gold. What brand did you use for it? I got a hunch, but I could be wrong.

    • Tamiya Gold Leaf.

    • I’m liking what I’m seeing so far. You’re using the exact same colors that you used on your base, am I right?

    • You would be correct.

    • Seems to be a surprisingly good metallic paint, pain to clean out of the airbrush though, or if the mix just a smidge too thick and having to give a quick blast into the exhaust fan.

Left my Kampfer and paint supplies at my friends place (whoops), so I snapped this together last night instead. It’s going to become Kirara’s, so I left the booster pack off.

So I have a few updates.

1: I was able to get the frame parts of the Banshee Norn painted up. I used German Grey for the frame parts, on the 1.0 version I used a Gunmetalish paint. It really made the kit to dark in my opinion. So this time I went with German Grey, it’ll retain the dark scheme of the kit without making it, to dark.

    2: I got…[Read more]

    • As a huge fan of German Grey, I’m anxious to see those frame parts.

Regarding the forum, it’s good news but only time will tell if the issue is solved completely. I’m hoping there’s no data loss this time.

    • I’ve been a fan of German Grey since I painted my MG Kampfer with it. It’s great stuff. And I think it’ll really give the Banshee a good look and feel. Better than my 1.0 version anyways.

And yeah, only time will tell. But hopefully this time it actually works.

    • My Norn arrived yesterday. Holy CRAP there’s a ton of runners in there!

      • I know right. Did you notice the added bonus part that comes with the Armored Armor DE plate?

        • I did not! Explain!

          • If you look at the plate with all the Armed Armor DE parts. You’ll notice a long gray piece with a peg on each end. That part, is what the Unit 3 Phenex HG used to mount the twin DEs onto it’s backpack.

            • No kidding? That’s convenient. Especially since I’m going to pass on the Phenex; too expensive, and the gold plastic is ugly.

Speaking of gold, I might…MIGHT…paint the Norn’s “crown” with Gundam marker. Should be easy enough; I dig the orange look, but the gold might look a bit better.

Of course, this is all just idle speculation. The Norn…[Read more]

              • I’d say that it would be pretty easy to do. Along with the XC parts and the collar.

            • No way. Are you telling me you’re going to make a Unicorn Banshee Phenex Norn? That will be one HECK of a suit. I’m really excited to see what you do.

              • You’re close. I’m officially calling:
                Unicorn Gundam Unit 04 Dremora

                • I see the obvious TES reference there. The forum can’t get back online soon enough. We need more order to keep track of projects like this, haha.

                  • I agree, the forum needs back up.

I’ve contemplated on adding a few areas of very dark red to the Destroy Mode. Just haven’t made up my mind yet.

So my Birthday was on Friday and the whole weekend became one long celebratory affair. The highlight though was Saturday morning, when my roommates took me to the local anime store (Wiz knows which one :P) and told me to go crazy until I hit the my allotted spending amount. So my backlog has grown (again) XD
    • Looks like that will keep you busy for a while, and belated Happy Birthday wishes.

    • Happy Birthday! You have a good Gunpla but an even better set of friends 😛

    • Happy birthday man!

    • happy beer day chapel! or born day if you don’t like beer lol. those are some good friends you got.

    • Happy birthday. Got yourself a mighty fine haul too.

    • Beer is a vital mainstay and called “Talent Juice” in the circles I mingle with XD And yes, they rule. I think one though is riding the euphoric high of her recent promotion and that’s why this wound up happening. Not that I’m complaining, lol XD

    • Many happy returns. And fine Gunpla choices!

    • Yeah, although most of them are familiar territory for me. I already helped build an HG Sengoku for a friend, I actually still own my MSiA Sazabi, and the Spiegel is only unique in a cosmetic sense, since all the Fighting Action MG’s share the same internal skeleton. The only one that’s really “new” is the Geara Zulu, which I look forward to…[Read more]

    • Happy late birthday. Great kits. It’s nice to see something from G Gundam. You usually don’t see those kits around these days.

    • Yeah, BanDai was really kind to the G-Gundam fans early by giving us 4 of the most important kits in MG form, but it would be great if they’d give the other Shuffle alliance members some needed HG love on the 1/144 scale, or at the very least make a 1/100 Rising Gundam since it already shares many of the parts with the MG Shining >.>

Today’s dumb question: I’ve seen people separate out Gundam parts for painting/topcoating on the ends of sticks jammed into a foam block or similar material. So…what do you use to attach the parts to the other ends of the sticks without damaging them, but also not blocking any spray? (Tape’s out for that reason.)

    • I use either small alligator clips or a wad of Blu-Tack.

    • As Linker said, I too use the Alligator Clips you get from Michaels for $4 for 12 (yo use that 50% off Coupon doe). I recently bought some Tacky but I have 36 Clips and tbh idk if I’ll ever need the Blu Tack 😐

    • I use alligator clips as well for my painting needs.

    • I use masking tape. It’s very versatile. I cut about 1/2-1 inch of tape and roll it on the skewer. And then just attach the part on it.

      • That doesn’t damage any paint?

        • Not because it acts just like Tacky things, since it’s rolled up you put it either under the Part (like a connector).

None of the Clips, Tack or tape should touch the surface to be painted.

          • I’ll have to give it a try. My test subject this time around has 3 measly points of articulation (it’s an AG kit), so that should work well.

            • I use it as I go. Alligator clips for the larger pieces, poster tack for the smaller rounded ones, or just sticking the end into a gap, if it fits.

So over the weekend I was able to finish up de-nubbing the framework parts to the Banshee Norn. So it’s finally time to start painting. So far I have all the frame parts, all the Armed Armor DE parts, the entire backpack + Armed Armor XC, the entire waist section, parts of the chest and feet, and the entire head.

    So I can’t wait to start…[Read more]

    • Sounds like a lot of parts to be painted. You’re still set on finishing the head first?

    • The head will most likely be completed 1st. But we’ll just have to wait and see what get’s done 1st.

It would also seem that I might be doing a favor for a friend of mine while I paint the Norn. We’ll see tomorrow as a few friends and I are making a trip to HobbyTown.

    • niiice! oh yeah what do you have in store for the color scheme?

    • I bought the HGUC Norn Destroy Mode because of you. Should be arriving any day now…and I’ve got the head base to build, too. Dunno if I’m going to paint them, as they do look kinda cool by default, even if they’re not 100% “screen accurate” that way.

      • Yeah that is my goal with the Unicorn Mode. Make it as close to screen accurate as possible. The Destroy Mode on the other hand, will be a bit more personalized.

As previously mentioned…Wing Zero Custom is done. My first MG, actually. Going to add decals, mods, and topcoat at a later date.
    • It looks really good. Clean build as always,

    • Thanks boss! Going to take you and Zeta-G’s advice and get some waterslides for it soon. Until then, there are other kits to build!

    • For the record, I wasn’t recommending water slides. I was recommending staying with the clean look. WZC isn’t exactly a realistic design to begin with, and I think that decals just detract from its angelic design.

    • Excellent. This thing will look even better when completed. How do you like the MG line over the HG?

    • As much as I dislike the suit and hate to admit it, it is a nice kit. Good job. Where did you get the hanger btw? Might want one at some point.

    • I see. Well, since it’ll stay as-is for a while, I guess we get the best of both worlds. 🙂

    • Lots of cool details, though finding a place to put this thing fully posed (with rifles and outspread wings) is going to be a a bitch. I still prefer the HG line, but that’s mainly because of price and a wider variety of suits. 🙂

    • It’s the H-Hangar system from Wave Corporation. I got mine from Gundam Planet; it’s two gray regular chain displays.

    • Just saw this now. Great job on the kit. Clean as always and the Heero fig is painted up nicely. I vote for putting some decals on the main suit itself. Angelic or not, it’s still something built by humans so it should have one or two warning decals somewhere.

    • And one of those warnings should be, “Don’t EVER use the goddamned ZERO System.”

    • Haha, I would seriously send that request to Samuel Decal and get it custom made.

    • Nice, lookin’ clean.
I’m fixing to learn how to Handpaint x.x;; I mean seriously I just don’t feel confident enough lol.

And Waterslides are great, but man it is exhausting and the results are equally as great.

    • I tried contacting them, and never got a reply. Oh well.

    • Would you be doing a fully painted kit by hand, or just handpainting details?

    • He’s really fast to respond through FB & Email.

I’ve ordered from him 3 times and he’s very great to deal with lol. (Ordered the Nu Ver Ka Metal detail-up and waiting for it to come in) & I don’t even have the Kit yet lol. Message him on FB if he hasn’t responded to email but the guy is super legit.

    • I don’t use FB. 🙁

    • mhmm I’d say just give him time to respond to emails.

He’s definitely my go to Decal guy if I need some, at the moment unsure what I’d need but meh.

    • I’ll email him again. Maybe the last one got lost, but it was months ago.

    • Best to just call there numbers hiding somewhere on their site.

    • A bit odd. I’ve dealt with him several times and he always responds within a few days. Granted, my requests have not been for custom designs.

    • He got back to me quickly this time. The last email must’ve just gotten lost. I’ve got a set of waterslide decals en route now; I’ll add ’em to the summer project pile!

    • Looking forward to them, man. To confirm, these are just standard or custom designed? Half of me is thinking you asked him to make decals with that warning about the ZERO System, haha.

    • Nah, I got his standard ones that are exact duplicates of those found in the kit, which is precisely what I wanted. (All of the other WZC decals I found on eBay, etc were slightly different.) There is a ZERO System decal in there, so I’m going to pretend that’s what the fine print says. 😉

Finished building the MG Wing Zero Custom…but unsure how to proceed with the decals. The kit came with foil ones (which I didn’t use, I painted instead), dry transfers (which I will definitely try), and clear stickers. It’s that last bit that gives me pause. How do they look when applied? I know waterslide decals are better, but the only…[Read more]

    • I used them a couple times when I first started doing Gunpla. They aren’t horrible, but they sure aren’t great either. Waterslides look much better.

    • Depends on the clear stickers. Some, like those included with the RG line and the 2012 SEED MGs, look pretty good, others look pretty bad. Definitely make sure that you thoroughly was your hands before applying them; they attract any and all dirt/ink/plastic-shavings/etc. that they come into contact with. Honestly, I’d skip them on the WZC.

      • Cool, thanks for the advice, guys. I’ll order some custom waterslides. Accuracy be damned! It’s MY model kit! 🙂
