    QUESTION TIME!

Ok so I finished a rg strike freedom, decal’d up (not water slides, using included stickers) and panel lined, but I wanted to take off the plastic sheen to it so I was thinking of doing a clear coat (matt) and yes, of course I’ll take the wings apart so I dont mess up the mekki gold 🙂

…but will this help the sticker decals at…[Read more]

Question, does anyone know where to get the…1/100 kotobukiya metal gear rex?

I left it too late, amiami, hlj (of course) and 1999.co.jp are out, anyone know a good safe place thats cheap or least one they tried, I feel ebay is a minefield and amazon is over priced :S

    • well you could always check your local hobby shops, comic book stores too sometimes they’ve got kits in there. other than that, I guess you just have to wait for a restock or pay the amazon price.

      • Says discontinued on hlj so it worried me :c

I tour local shops all the time and zilch, oh well thanks for the suggestions!

        • there have been things listed as discontinued before that have come back into stock, though I don’t know if that’s the case here. anyways that’s really all the advice I can give for this so I’ll just say good luck hope you can track one down.

    I have a venting issue!!!
Who here has an indoor airbrush set up?
What kind of venting system do you use to get rid of solvents?

    • Hi,
I use only acrylic paints, so not experienced with solvents.
However, a simple spray booth should also get rid of the solvents fumes (unless your spray without pauses for long periods).
The one I’m using is the one reviewed here:

it should be also solvent proof due to filter and material used for the…[Read more]

      • Thanks for the info mate!
But alas it is of no help 🙁 I’ve done a thorough searching of the internet and the main sticking point is sparks and solvents being highly flammable .. But wait I hear someone say! Brushless motors , while only marginally more expensive, don’t spark! But also solvents have this fantastic ability to disolve the insulative…[Read more]

    • well I’ve been painting with mr.color lacours for a couple of years using a normal spray booth and haven’t blown myself up yet. The one I’m using has the fan in the back and blows the fumes to the sides, and as far as I know the fumes aren’t getting to the engine but could be wrong on that part.

anyways the one I use is Mr. Super Booth, it’s…[Read more]

Here’s my problem ppl I’ve gloss coated for water decals, applyed decals and weatherd with oil wash, now I am puting gloss and flat top coats depending on piece and my decals are turning white. What can I do?

    • maybe the oil wash is causing the silvering (thats what i have heard it called) once it reacts to another layer of top coat? at best its a guess. got no idea how to solve it sorry.
maybe gloss coat then decals then another gloss coat before oil wash.

    • Your silvering cuz yeah oil n next coat interaction. You need to coat, decals, coat, weather, then final coat.

      Hope that helps josh

If you’ll pardon an almost-total noob, I’m interested in getting started but I have a couple of questions to that end. First, I’m in a fairly rural part of the USA, so no hobby or toy shops that carry Mobil Suit kits are within any kind of reasonable distance, so I’m pretty much left to buying online. Is it better to buy from say HLJ and pay the…[Read more]

    • Ah,welcome!
I started a mere 7 months ago, but since I’ve gone from out-of-the-box builds to owning my first airbrush set and having a dedicated modeling area. So be warned, you may go further down the rabbit hole then you expected.
I’m in Queensland, Australia, and there is no such thing as gundam in a brick and morter store. So everything comes…[Read more]

      • Thanks very much, I’ll take a look at the shipping costs and decide where to get myself started. I won’t be painting or recoloring unless it’s by hand since I don’t have a place to spray anything, but I’m definitely going to start assembling properly, panel lining, and maybe some damage effects (starting on cheaper kits until I know what I’m…[Read more]

        • Another company you could use ( Syd from hobby link tv uses it too) for bandai online exclusives is “gentei kits”, guy is based in japan (looks flash but it seems to be all done by one guy XD) so the prices aren’t so bad with only a slight mark up from bandai directly, but do look into the shipping prices as its an odd set up…

          I just know from…[Read more]

          • Thanks, I checked out Gentei and GG Infinite and found a couple good deals on the Rebawoo, I’m thinking that and a couple HGUC MP Bawoos from HLJ to make up a little squadron/strike force to start with, start with trying out some panel lining and handpainting, should be a nice re-start for me and I’m looking forward to it.

I am build the 1/48 normal age 1 and wanted to know if there was any after market parts for gundam that size

  • Hi this is my first time spray painting pieces with a Tamiya Spray Paint. Does the use of a primer make a huge difference in terms of saving the amount of paint used?

And I had grainy yellow paint despite shaking and putting it in warm water. My other colors went well on the pieces. Is this because I chanced upon an old stock? If so, how to…[Read more]

    • i have not found that a primer coat saves me a noticeable amount of paint, however, depending on the colors that you are painting over or to ie painting over a red with a white, or painting a part silver. a primer makes a huge difference. i find that a black primer under a silver, gold, or mica red makes the final color look amazing

      as for grainy…[Read more]

      • so sometimes not using it would be acceptable if i’ll be painting a dark color over a ligher one? i read about the black primer for a metallic finish, want to see it for myself. 🙂

well i asked others and they told me it was because of the paint being an old stock. but yeah i noticed it blows paint pretty poorly when its almost empty. nope, i…[Read more]

    • Not so much saving paint as improving the quality of the finish, and giving your paint something to stick to (unless you are painting by hand), although if you are worried about paint in general sticking to the plastic, just give it a wash in luke warm soapy water.

  • hi guys I want to buy thing ahead for next year plamo contest and I need to fund this bad boy of a model

    • …so what was your plan/question, im confused, you want us to help fund your project, you need help choosing your kit and or choosing the direction you need to go?

      • ah I put a link what happen to the the item I need in questiont? no I chose a model I just need any help find a site that may still sell it. its the cammabd car from patlabor .this guy http://www.dalong.net/review/ex/ex03/ex03_p.htm

hope fully the link above it is still thier

        • Well its obviously not on hlj, 1999.co.jp list them as “sold out” (I typed patlabor ex model and yours was infact there) and no idea if they’d restock…

Doesn’t look like an easy task, gotta search ebay or amazon and hope for the best!

    • I saw it in my local store, you can try ebay but don’t think is cheap because is EX model.. I thought you want the bigger size by Pair Dot that hlj throw out sale year ago.

Paint Question, What would you recommend for a shiny silver finish as seen on Gundam Astray Red Frame’s swords? Nothing I can find out there produces a finish that is almost mirror like. Please advise

    • That is mirror finish chrome not silver. There are many like Alcad II or if you really want that chrome, try a Japanese brand (I can’t remember the brand) or MGM chrome powder (Taiwan), only chrome powder can such effect and of course it cannot be seal with clear coat.

If you are from America, this will not be a problem as there is number of…[Read more]

    • I found that if you are careful painting chrome silver, you can get a close reflection effect on parts. Also, like Kuroneko said you can always use paint or pigment that was specifically meant for a mirror-like reflection.

    • Ive had pretty good success using alclad II chrome sprayed over a coat of gloss enamel. As far as chrome powders, I’ve heard good things about kosutte gin-san, although its a bit difficult to find.

      • thanks guys, I don’t have an airbrush in my possession, so I will have to think of something else. I am currently using rattle cans. Another question, if I want to dry brush to creating weathering, where in the painting/top coat stage do I do so and then what topcoat do I apply if any?

        • Any topcoat will do. And that’s depend on what final result you. Dull metal color, flat coat. Shiny ‘bling bling’ metal finish, gloss.

If you using rattle can, you might take a look into commercial rattle can paint. If I’m not wrong, there is Chrome in a can, but best is do a resin primer first to prevent the color eating through color and into…[Read more]

Hi, got another gundam paint question, this time involving gundam unicorn PHENEX (hg gft version)!

I’m conflicted between a Out of box build with panel lines (Since I have the mg coming, I have an odd collection of unicorns now) or to paint, thing is I cannot exactly match what the manual says to use since I’m a spray can noob (the main body…[Read more]

    • Prepare to do many masking.

make it easy to understand…after your primer, gloss black or semi-gloos black, then metallic color. Like Gold will be on black if you want your gold to shine. The rest are the same, black will be yor base color for all metallic color. The clear orange and clear yellow, are they suppose to be clear or metallic? Try…[Read more]

      • Thanks, um the clears are meant to be clear…

Looking at the display pic it has a hint of orange showing as its not quite a straight up gold, but a bright sun like color…

The plastic currently is close to it but the plastic defects are enhanced 10 fold by it somehow, guess bandai need more practice with “gold” plastic XD

Hey guys ive recently started building my first f1 plastic kit and was wondering for the dry transfer decals for the tyres…When I use any sort of decal on plastic kits I spray clear coat over it to protect the decal…Do you guys spray clear coat over dry transfers on rubber tyres?

    Thanks

    • I would to protect them. Any type of paint will do, gloss, matte, satin. As long as it doesn’t interfere with the pre-existing paint.

    • You don’t need any clear coat on tire decal, btw, is not dry transfer…is decal but printed opposite like high-tech decal. The way of doing it is cut the tire decal with water, wet your tires too, then flip the decal (means the decal is facing tires and decal backing is facing you.) After it sit on it, removed water and slowly removed the decal…[Read more]
