I’ve never done that, but I have used stickers as ready-cut masks. That works pretty good and saved a lot of time doing the gold on Sinanju’s shield for instance.
I’ve ordered the MG Sengoku, but I’m sure the paint ideas will be applicable to the HG version too. But be warned, I’ve got a large backlog and won’t be getting to it for a while.
like this perhaps? http://www.graemenattress.com/wp/10/ – the effect is a “candy coat”. The basic idea is you lay down layers of paint to produce the effect. For that I used Alclad gloss black followed by Alclad chrome followed by Tamiya clear red. Once my Sengoku arrives, I plan to do something similar with it….
A lot like that yeah. I think the Sengoku’s black shows through a lot more, but I realize the anime is gonna do things that can’t be perfectly replicated. I should have picked a model that was less tricky with it’s paint! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’ll be watching and looking forward to your Sengoku build.

From what I’ve built recently, can recommend MGs: Geara Doga, Sazabi, RX78-2 V3.0. They’re all good fun builds, that assemble well and warrant good attention to detail on the painting.
First I put down an undercoat of either Alclad gloss black, grey, or white primer. Then the red I used was Createx pearl red. I then finished with a coat of Tamiya clear red on top.

http://www.graemenattress.com/wp/1100-mg-sazabi-ver-ka/ – what I did was three different undercoats – white, grey and black and the same red on top of each. That gave me the differentiation I needed. I dunno if that works with your spray cans, but you could experiment and see.

Thanks mate, that’s plan B.
