Gunpla TV – Episode 117 – Gundam Aile Strike RM – PG GP01 – SD Comp Winners!

We’re back after our little excursion to Shizuoka, or The Shizz as we like to call it. And we’ve got some of those new kits from Shizuoka here in the studio with us. Ryan also discusses the start of his adventures in PG land, while Syd talks about the MG Aile Strike RM. And offers up a little Omake for those who are paying attention because hey, it’s his birthday and he can do stuff like that.

Kits featured in this video:

– BB Sazabi
– 1/144 HG Gundam Astray Blue Frame 2nd
– MG Aile Strike Gundam Ver. RM
– 1/60 Perfect Grade RX-78 Gundam GP01/Fb

  1. Hey Syd and Ryan, just stopped by to say “happy birthday” to Syd. How old are you, if I may ask?? ;P

Anyway, best wishes again and, as we say in Italy in these circumstances, “I wish you one hundred of these days”!!

  3. Ryan, Syd, as always, love the video. I’d like to give my two cents toward explaining the My Little Pony phenomenon. The most recent show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, was created by a cartoonist named Lauren Faust. She’s a fairly famous cartoonist for her work in the cartoons, the Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and Samurai Jack. These cartoons were absolute hits in their time, so that much drew people to give My Little Pony a shot. Sure enough, the new cartoon had a lot of what made Faust’s earlier works so great: good animation, not-dumbed-down writing, multifaceted characters, even a fairly strong overarching subplot. It’s my opinion that some of the popularity is just for the sake of being ironic- that is, it’s ironic for a grown man to be a fan of a My Little Pony cartoon, whose target audience is 5 year old girls. I think it’s appropriate to say, though, that its fandom is comparable to Gundam fandom. Both are good cartoons with diehard fans for their own reasons, both were essentially made to sell toys (I mean that’s where you guys come in right?), and both elicit a sort of “wait, you like what?” response from people who aren’t themselves fans.

Also, Syd, start a hockey channel. Call it Hockey Link Japan.

  4. Hello, I am Jason and I am a brony.

Thankfully, I am also older then even Syd and largely don’t care what the internet thinks of me. So there are better and more articulate descriptions of what makes the My Little Pony thing a phenomenon. However, I can bring in some of the basics. Number 1, the show is a fairly well written show, with interesting characters, good humor and an uplifting message. Number 2, the internet allowed a lot of people who would normally be nervous about admitting they liked this show to find each other and form a community.

I think it is parallel to (but not exactly the same as) the moe phenomenon in Anime. The cuteness of the characters helps sell the show.

Brief history, My Little Pony was a show created three years ago by Hasbro to cash in on the nostagalia craze started with Transformers. They were hoping that, like Transformers bring in some adults and bunches of kids wanting toys. It was aimed solidly at young girls (much like the original), but they brought in a talented writer / creator who managed to create a show that transcended its scope.

You can easily find whole episodes of the show on the internet. If you are curious, watch an episode. They are not for everyone, like Horror or Sci-Fi is not for everyone, but at least you will have an idea.

As always, keep up the good work and thanks for the show.

  5. Hey syd and ryan great show

I just have a question about the hands you showed

Do they also come for smaller MGs? (ex: seed kits, wing kits, etc)

  6. Hey Syd, I just built my first gunpla after 9 years. I love darker armor gunpla kits but the way i want to do the next one is 100% no paint or marker. When i take the armor from the runners and sand down the nub im left with a bit of weathering from it. Is there a way where i can do this more proficiciently?

  7. Brony, shmrony… I WANT AN HLJ SHIRT! 😀
As for the horsies, I was maybe 6-9, not sure how old exactly when the original was aired. And I’m 33 now. Had no idea that it was remade/revamped. As for the original, mostly all I remember was a bunch of commercials with these little horsies that wore dresses. Which was awkward for me at that time and to this day it still is. The only thing comparable to My Little Pony would be the Care Bears. But yeah, the same way moe is popular to some I can imagine Care Bears would be to someone else and Ponies to the others. I was more of a Transformers/Robotech kind of a kid. Boarded a Gundam ship just recently and was blown away by some of the stories. I’d have to admit though, being a guy with more than enough imagination I could and can relate and (still) look up to some of the qualities of a huge robotic monsterlike machine’s pilot but somehow I just can’t relate to a cute pink horsie with a dress and a horn. I know, it’s just me and there are people that would bid to differ but to each his own I guess.
And a huge nod to Jason for clearing things up for the rest of us. When someone tries to explain this phenomenon with that much depth it just goes without saying that it’s much aprreciated for I learned one more thing I just can’t say I wasn’t curious about after watching this episode. Thanks! If you have a Youtube channel, I’d love to take a look at those horsies for myself and see what’s the hype about.
As for these HLJ guys: SHIRT! SELL IT NAO! 🙂

    (Best wishes from Serbia)
