  1. I watch G-Gundam and probably most of the Gundam show that aired in America though I like the showed and all I din’t know much of a hobby or stuff then in 2009 out of luck there was a Hobby shop that had gundams and everything sadly it closed but it made me get into Gunpla. Though the kit I started with was the MG MS-09 DOM OYWV which amazed and I just kept buying and now I finally got a PG which I’m taking my time to savor and Enjoy. Great Episode to start the Year.

  3. I got into Gundam like almost all the fans here in the US did, which was by watching Gundam Wing on tv. As a kid, I never really liked gunpla, I thought they were two fragile to play with, so I would buy the MSIA figures instead. Around 2007, I watched Code Geass, and I really wanted a figure or something of the robots, so I looked them up and found that the figures were way more expensive than the kits, so I got my first kit in about 2 years, the Vincent. After I built the Vincent, I was hooked. I then went back to watch all of the Gundam series'(even ZZ!). and I’ve been into the hobby ever since!

  5. I didn’t know much about Gundams or GunPla. I’ve seen my friends as a kid who had some SD kits. This was back in around the early 90s. Then when Gundam Wing aired on Toonami, I got a lot more interested. I kept with Gundam series after that and I also checked out older series like 08th MS Team, G Gundam, and Gundam X. I skimmed through Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny since those weren’t that good… But Gundam 00…Yea. That’s pretty much where my Gundam interested exploded. Gundam Unicorn is ok, but by far Gundam 00 is what I like best. I’ve heard rumors about a new Gundam TV series coming in 2011. But I can’t imagine how they’d be able to top off Gundam 00. =D

  6. Before I got into Gundam, I was getting interested in other anime kits: around ’97 or so I saw Macross Plus and Patlabor and, as luck would have it, the comic shop down the street from my school had an Ingram kit and some reissues of the old Arii VF-1 kits. I think the first anime kit I built in that period was the 1:100 scale VF-1J Gerwalk (though what I’d really wanted was the VF-11 – it took me a little while to get my hands on the Bandai VF-11C). Later, when I built the Bandai 1:60 Ingram, I started with a specific goal: I wanted to make it look good enough that I could take a photo of it and composite the photo with a picture of my hometown police station… My modeling skills weren’t quite good enough to make that work, and my camera at the time was nowhere near good enough anyway… But by aiming for that goal I pushed myself to achieve better results than I had before.

I didn’t really get into Gundam until Gundam Wing was broadcast in the US. I remember seeing Gundam Wing kits in shops back in the late 90s – at the time I thought they were too silly and gimmicky compared to the Macross stuff I was building.

Before that, I was very interested in the old Star Wars model kits. I bought a whole bunch of them, but there were only a few that I ever finished half-decently. Those were the kinds of kits that you -had- to glue and paint.

A big thing for me was when I discovered newsgroups (esp. the now-defunct “rec.arts.anime.models”) – it’s easy to take it for granted these days, with forums all over and video tutorials online, it’s always easy to find skilled modelers to help teach you new skills… but this was huge for me. It was the first time I had people I could turn to for advice and direction in the hobby, and it helped me a lot. (Google has an archive of the group, if you’re curious about what fans were discussing 10 or more years ago…)

Another big early influence (which I discovered through RAAM) was the work of Misaki Mitsuaki. I wanted to make some improved parts for a kit I was working on and someone sent me a link to scans of one of his “Suku Suku Scratch” articles (which later became part of the “Gunpla Scratch Build Manual” – I can’t recommend that book highly enough!) – I learned a lot from that stuff, and his build of the Zaku FZ was one of the things that motivated me to eventually start a build of my own… One of these days I think I have to figure out how to send him a fan letter. 🙂

  7. As Mack said I got in to Gundam by watching Gundam Wing when it was on the Cartoon Network a number of years ago. While watching the anime my local Toys ‘R Us began carrying the kits associated with the show and I immediately picked up a 1/144 Gundam Heavy Arms and the obsession continued from there into 1/100 HG kits and eventually MG kits.

I’ve continued to watch the anime and while I took a diversion from Gunpla to pick up some of the Yamato and Bandai Macross die cast toys I must say I’m very happy to be currently building the revised MG Unicorn kit. Next up on my list of wants is the RG RX-78-2 and eventually the PG 00 Raiser! 🙂

  8. FYI guys I am unable to transfer the podcast of this episode to my iPod, it says that my ipod won’t play it. Episode 23 podcast worked fine. Did you do something different this time around?

    • @ Sonar sorry we have not done anything different is it maybe the length of the video that could be causing a problem?
The video has been rendered and exported out of FCP in the same codec as the previous episodes.

  9. I saw a commercial when I was in the fifth grade, so about ten years ago, for gundam model kits here in the US. At the time Toonami, the greatest cartoon segment there ever was in the US, had just aired the first episode of Gundam Wing. When I was young I was really into legos and building things. So when I saw that commercial I was totally in. I started watching Gundam Wing and bought a couple kits. I think my first kit was the 1/100 HG Deathscythe. Anyway, I have been a huge Gundam and mecha fan ever since. I stopped building the models for a couple years but got back into it last year. I’m still a huge fan of the anime too. Although I still haven’t found the time to go back and watch all the early series…… Someday.

  11. It’s funny, I got into Gundam almost the same way you did. I am an English teacher it Hitoyoshi which is on Kyushu. I’ve been in Japan for 2 and a 1/2 years. When I was in the states, I was really into R/C airplanes. But, I live in a 1k apartment and have no room for them. But, I still love to work on models. So, I’ve gotten into Gundam over the last year and really enjoy it. The kits are so much easier than the Monogram or Testor kits that are in the states. Thank you for your videos. I’ve been working on the MG Sinanju this week.

  14. Great episode. Really like the new opening and closing. Funny that you point out having a good sharp pair of side cutters is a good idea for a PG. I was thinking your set looked/sounded a little blunt 😀

Nb: Chimera is pronounced Shimmer-uh 😀

My first exposure to Gunpla was my father-in-law’s PG RX-78-2. It’s a story I remember fondly and never get tired of telling. If you are interested you can read about it <a href=http://gundamaustralia.com/forum/index.php/topic,319.msg3839.html#msg3839.here.

  15. Well, you have probably have seen my work on the boards and forums before under mvm3897. The Sinanju on the “UC Submit Content” page is mine and was my very first completed Gundam meaning airbrushed and decaled. The UC Featured Content : 5 Gundam : 45 Days is also my work.
I first discovered a Gundam model kit at my local Wal Mart over 20 years ago. At that time I just loved building models of any kind and I especially loved the Gundam because of there ease of assembly. I was only 12 or 13 years old back then and never painted anything. If anything I would light them on fire or blow them up with firecrackers. Fast forward to 2008, I was just surfing on the internet and happened upon a Gundam forum. It had been over 20 years since I had touched a plastic model kit and seeing them again brought back a ton of great memories that I had as a kid. So the research began. I joined the http://www.gamerabaenre.com/forums/index.php forum and found a great set of video tutorials that covered everything from snapping, sanding nubs, prepping and painting. I watched those vids over and over. At the same time I joined the http://fichtenfoo.coforumm// forum and found another great set of tutorials called “How to Build Master Grade Kits” This was another great find and I must have reviewed that set of tutorials at least a hundred times. I spent the last part of 2008 and the first 6 months of 2009 just reading and asking questions on different techniques. I was snapping a few kits here and there but that’s it. Back when I was 12 or 13 I did not have the money to get the correct tools I needed to do anything but snap. Now that I was a big boy, 34 years old and owner of my own photography business, I had the money and time to get what I needed. In late 2008 I bought everything I needed to complete a kit. This included an air brush, air compressor, a complete stock of Mr. Color paints, putties, hobby knives, files, sanding sticks; you name it I bought it. At the same time I was also compiling a very large collection of kits. I think I have 40 G-System kits, 30 or so conversion kits with the matching kits, 5 Neograde kits, and about 15 MG kits. I also have all the 1/48 Fine Molds Star Wars and just got the 1/72 Millennium Falcon and a few others from different manufacturers. Anyway, with the knowledge and confidence I needed I set out to finish my first kit in August of 2009. I chose the Sinanju because I just love the design OOB. I spent about 3 weeks and 60 hours + to finish him. He was the first kit that I ever primed, airbrushed and decaled. All the markings are the Dry Transfers that came with the kit and I love the way they turned out. It was also the first time that I tried using Future Floor Polish as a top coat and well, the results speak for them selves. I think for my first kit it looks AWESOME!!!! It has even won 1st place 2 times in local Model Competitions.
So the madness continues. I have completed a total of 15 kits in the past year and a half and each one just keeps getting better. I am actually doing another Sinanju right now with the Neograde conversion to celebrate 1 year of me doing Gunpla. Be on the look out for it in the next few weeks.
I am now even fortunate enough that people are starting to commission me to do work for them. So not only do I get to do the hobby I love I even make a little money at the same time.
I love the Bandai kits but my favorite types of kits are Resin Conversions and full Resin Kits. I have every G-System kit offered, and yes that includes all the 1/35 stuff.
Discovering Gunpla has made a huge impact on my life. Although I am not into Anime, I love building these kits. It’s my way to relax and just forget about everything else. My 4 year old daughter even helps me out and I look forward to the day that my 1 year old son can get involved as well. My wife thinks I am crazy but she puts up with me and my obsession.
I think the best part though is all the friends I have made all over the world. I have friends all over the place and being able to share what we love is an awesome feeling.
    That’s my story.

    Thanks for reading
    Matt

  16. O.K. I just finish building my PG Strike Freedom and I’m pretty impress by the size when I spread the wings, but for some reason the Dragoons won’t stay in the wing, it keeps springing out even after I hear a click sound and sometimes the wing won’t spread between the 2 Dragoons. Also what is that thing on his back where the construction manual said that you can push but I can’t? Overall I’m not that impress with the building of the Gundam because it just looks like a oversize MG.

  17. Welcome back Syd!!!

Man that PG seems to be quite a challenge!!! I’m not a real big fan of gold, but for some reason it kinda works for this kit…

First exposure to gundam I was around 4-5… In Manila, we didn’t have the tv shows at the time(msg, zeta gundam… etc), and mecha shows were like Voltron, Transformers, Voltes V… etc… but for some reason people new what a Gundam was!!!
First real exposure to gunpla because of Gundam Wing and G-Gundam… I enjoyed both at the time, but now I kinda think G-Gundam was one huge parody about stereotyping each country in that series… haha… But now I’ve watched the original series(Universal century timeline) and I see what all the fuss was all about… I can’t believe they came up with that back in 1979!!! Zeta was also good and it will really be a hard choice if i was asked to pick one among the 2….

  18. Hi There!, My story of how a I get into this hobby stats when I was 14 years old, I’m 27 now, at that i started watching Evangelion,I’m from Mexico by the way, so My aunt gave me a model kit of the 3rd Angel Sachiel, it is not the big deal but was my first build and I still kept it, later I will post photos on the user content.
Then I started watching Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network, this was my first encounter with a Gundam, I was Impressed for the design of the Mechas, some time later I traveled to Los Angeles to visit that famous mouse’s amusement park, luckyly near the hotel wich I was staying was,I do not know if is still there, a comics shop there I saw the 1/100 HG Gundam Wing Zero Custom, I was impressed for the details of this kit so I first built it and then painted it.
Some years later a toy store opened near my house I visited and found the 1/100 HG Altron Gundam (Nataku) and 1/100 HG Deathscyte Hell Gundam and bought both. Also painted them, using Tamiya’s paint, this also was my first encounter with the brand.
By that time I finished studying High School and started to go to College on these days I haven’t much time to build, so I left the hobby, but from around one year I start again with the Gunpla when I got a 1/144 HG 00 Gundam, then I bought 1/100 MG Gundam Exia Ignition Mode this was my first MG I loved the details and fell in love with the MG line.
When I finish that kit I searched for more and found the Hobbylink Japan’s page, what I like of HobbyLink is the fact that they gave the estimated price in Mexican Pesos!!!!, so I start shopping in HobbyLink, I have bought the 1/100 MG GN-X, 1/100 MG Wing Gundam, 1/100 MG Wing Gundam Zero Custom, 1/100 MG V Gundam Core Booster,1/100 MG 00 Qan[T], 1/60 PG Strike Freedom, this kit is amazing and also my firts PG and the last gunpla that I have bought is the 1/100 ReZel, I ordered yesterday due to the Gundam Sale!.
This is my story, the only bad thing is that I’m running out of room for he kits 🙂 that I already have and the ones that will come. I’m sure I will solve that matter.
By the way I’m looking for a job, may I work in HobbyLink I’m an Actuary 🙂

  19. I first got into Gunpla when I was a wee lad in 2000, around 10 years ago. My first kit I brought in Hong Kong was the purple Gundam, 1/144 Gundam Ashtaron. It was also the first kit I painted. I got some more series related kits to Gundam X and those included the 1/100 Airmaster and Airmaster Burst because I was a fan of transforming kits. During those years, I got into Gundam Wing kits and the animation.

But, building the kits wasn’t quite enough. I wanted to know more, so I watched the older animations of Gundam. Really enjoyed them.

Today, I still look at Gunpla and build them. And I never forget about the first time I went into that little shop in Hong Kong to buy my first Gunpla.

  22. Thought you guys may be interested to know: I just downloaded and transferred the podcasts for EP’s 25, 26, and 27 to my iPod. I deleted and re-downloaded ep.24 and it still failed to transfer. I think you could be right in saying it may be to do with the length of the episode? May be worthwhile splitting the longer ones into two podcasts the way you have with ep.25 😉

  23. Interestingly though Ep.26 is 4 seconds shorter than 24 and it transferred ok. If noone else is mantioning having problems with that podcast then it may be on my end 😉
