Gunpla TV – Episode 107 – What is MG (Master Grade) Gundam?

In this episode of Gunpla TV Syd gives a brief overview of Bandai’s Master Grade line of Gundam kits going right back to the beginning with the very first MG kit ever made and then showing the Sinanju Stein, the most recent. While the Master Grade line is too massive to give a full comprehensive look in one episode Syd tries to highlight what’s important. Look for more detailed Master Grade discussion in future episodes.

  1. Loved it! It’s actually 5 in the morning here and I was just going to bed. About Sinanju, somehow the “hand problem” didn’t catch it’s huge rifle but it can’t hold it’s axes at all. Other than that that would probably be the one kit I’d build again. A question, it’s pretty much confirmed we’re getting Zogok some time this year but did they made it official? See you on that poll on FB!

  2. Id say the 00 gundam MG were a great leap with the intergrating the LED

  3. I have built many MG kits in the past and by far my biggest disappointment with a MG kit was the first Zeta Gundam. The kit was honestly brilliant, with the ability to do a single piece full transformation , the only achille’s hill was the hip joint that cracked and broke after a few attempt of transforming the kit. I built it back when I was still in school and having a kit that costs me well over $75 at the time to break on me like that was heart breaking. I was very glad when Bandai released the ver. 2.0 of that kit with a completely redesigned hip joint, snatched that up in a heartbeat

  4. The Victory Gundam is the worst Gundam ever made. I cannot keep any pieces on, the model will not stand up and just a overall poorly designed gundam.

  5. I would like to add that this show was pretty good. Nice getting a perspective of the MG line. I do have a question that other viewers may want to know…when selecting an MG how do you know what series it’s from if you do not watch the anime? Can you tell us about the markings on the box?

  6. Ryan If you ever decide to build a MG I would recommend the MG MSA-0011(Ext) Ex-S Gundam it is the most badass MG around and biggest.

  8. @Djerikfury. There is a little white box on the top corner of the kit which tells you the series the kit belongsto.
@ryan, you should build the Sazabi or the O MGs because they are so big

  9. Id say that the God Gundam was a pretty significant advancement with its “action frame.” If I’m not mistaken it’s one of the earliest kits with a full inner frame, if not the first.

  10. I think the SEED line was a big step forward with all the detail they put onto the frames and the inner armor pieces. As for a kit I’d build again, I would build the Epyon or Strike freedom again very quickly. I just completed the Unicorn and am now questioning getting the Banshee at all. it was a very frustrating build and the Banshee is very similar.

  11. Any chance for an episode for SD Gundam? An episode to help those not familiar wth it the differences between the Musha series, Knight Series, Sangokuden, and the SD G-Generation, as well as the recently started BB Legend lines. Despite their small size, the SD line has gone through quite a bit of change over the years as well, but its numbering system and series differention is probably the most complicated and confusing of them all.

  12. @Ren I do believe you are right. The first full internal frame MG Gunpla was indeed the G Gundam series kits (Shinning, God, Master & Spigel)

  13. A big improvement on MG kits i say would be the foot and leg design, mostly in the posing and aesthetics aspect. In the foot would be the joint that allowed the heel and toe to move. The separate fame and armor pieces for the knees, where the older kits have the knee as a part of the caff of the leg, revealing the knee joint, which isn’t all that pleasant. Also the many details of pistons and shocks placed into the frame. I do love the Gundam EX-S, have built a HG version (doesn’t stand with the back pack on). Would love to build the MG version, but haven’t gotten around to obtain one yet. (which i read also can not stand and very large)

  14. I like the design made in Mk-II with hydraulic effect on the elbows, knees and feet. It gives a more realistic look on how the joints move.

Btw, any news when the armed armor for the gundam unicorn will be restocked?

  15. Patrick, the MG EX-S comes with a base that is incorporated in the build itself. It’s in the manual, right in the middle of the build. So it’s intended to be build with the base in the first place. No worries about whether he can or can not stand on it’s own with that huge backpack. The downside of the kit is that the box is huge! So shipping costs hurt a bit more than usual. So yeah, it’s a brick that can’t do much in terms of articulations. It can just stand on your shelf and look good. If you’re someone that likes to play around with your models this kit is a big no-no. If you’re into building large brick kits (Full Armor Unicorn for example) like I am, you’re right at home with this one.

  17. Syd! My first MG was the Zaku II MS-06s (Char’s Zaku II). Yes, the oldest of the old!

    PLASTIC
One of the differences I believe is that the kits have better plastic now than the old MGs. The old kits, they all broke, broke with little pressure.

    HANDS
As Syd states. All the hands had a consistant design, especially in the Zaku line. The Gundam hands also remained consistant except for G Gundam and some others. I think the Gundam One Year War Ver. MG is the one that started having new improved hands or started looking into improving them.

The Sandrock styled hands, they’re like a revisit of the GPO3 Stamen hands but the GP03 never had removable fingers, instead, they give you like a set pair with minimanl movement.

MG has come a long way. And RGs are quickly catching up being the next popular lineups along with MGs. 🙂

  18. Regarding MGs to come this year or future, does anyone have inclination whether Bandai is interested in producing Wing Zero TV version? The only glimmer of hope I see is the Wing Gundam being the only non-EW MG Gundam Wing kit released so far.

  19. Nice video, Mr. Sid & Mr. Ryan

This humble builder has began his work with MG Freedom & finished with MG Sinanju ver. Ka, just a comment as you mates ask for, This GPB think the entire MG line begin to evolved in 2006 with the MG F91, which is the first complete & full articulated inner frame, then, Bandai goes further & put out a MG 2.0 line as statement what is a basic standard MG should be evaluated today

Sorry for my poor English grammar & God bless you
