Ok, so today i went to the hobby store and got me some light green gundam marker, clear green acrylic paint, and flat black acrylic paint and some brushes, and that paint thinner.

So i mainly bought these to learn how to colour the eyes of my gundams, Will practice on my high grades first which the plastic for the eyes aren’t clear transparent plastic at all.

OK SO WHAT ARE THE METHODS AND HOW DO I DO THIS? I’VE NEVER USED PAINT BEFORE..

DO I JUST POUR THE PAINT IN THE METAL PAINT DISH AND STICK MY BRUSH IN IT? WHEN DO I USE THE THINNER? DO I MIX THE THINNER WITH IT? HOW DO I DO THIS? WHAT ARE THE STEPS? PLZ HELP ME?

so my questions are haha…..what do i do first? how do i mix and prepare the paint?

do i pain the black on to the gundam eyes first? or the green colour first, then the black around the pupils?

as for the Master grade clear plastic, do i paint the eyes black, then use the paint thinner to wipe off the black off the pupils, and then use the clear green? or paint the whole eyes clear green and then use a super thin brush to pain the black around the pupils?

plz help….sorry for the long and hard confusing post…..THANKS!

    • thinner is used for 2 things:
      1. you mix it with your paint to get it to a nice consistency generally close to a 1 to 1 ratio is pretty good.
      2. you use it to clean your brushes.

but I hate to tell you this but you have the wrong thinner. the Mr.hobby thinner is a lacqour thinner what you want is Tamiya x20 thinner.

as for how to paint the eyes, as you may have gotten from your last post there are a few different ways to go about it. I don’t do it very often myself but the method I’d use for a kit I really wanted to look good would be to coat the whole clear part in silver, then go over the eyes with the clear green then carefully going around the eyes carefully with the black. Having the silver on before the clear green will give it kind of a shine.

    • thanks very much steven!

so what i have right now is lacquer thinner?

      • yup that’s right, what I see there in that pic is a lacquer thinner, it’s pretty hard to tell with everything being Japanese and all, that is ofcourse unless you can read Japanese, but usually the store guys should be able to tell you.

upon further digging though it seems you can use lacquer thinner with acrylic paint, most people even seem to be saying you get better results like that. I’ve never tried it but I don’t see any reason not to try it if other people are getting results with it.

Oh but if you do decide to get the Tamiya thinner, make sure that it’s acrylic cause they also make enamel and both are called x20
