I’ve been spending time on more experiments again before I start painting the KA and here’s the latest one: The Draken-E from the HGUC GM Sniper II. Included the original just for kicks.

Long story short, I first clear-coated it with a layer of Future, then did an acrylic wash using the method I used for the Turn A. Bad idea, because even though the Future got a week to cure, it completely faltered once I tried to clean up the wash. Not only that, the Future actually caused the paint to run as if it was getting thinned again. It baffles me why because all of the blue has been painted on for a few weeks now, plenty of time to dry/cure.

I’m going to stop using Future as a general clear coat now and just start using Alclad Aqua Gloss Clear. I find that stuff to be much tougher, dries faster, and can be brushed on just as easily. Future, my good sir, you have disappointed me.

    • Complications aside, it looks like it came out great!

      • Glad you think so, man 🙂

I took that pic last night after I applied two layers of Alclad AGC on it. I was so disappointed with how weak the Future coat was that I made darn sure it’s got something tougher on top. I seriously don’t know why I didn’t do that before. For cryin’ out loud, I could handle the thing within 20 minutes without finger prints showing on the coat. Future couldn’t do that for me…

    • Reading this really makes me want to try out the Aqua Gloss Clear. Dlinker do you Airbrush it right out of the bottle or do you thin it a bit?

Also I’ve never had that much trouble with Future before. But I’ve always done an enamel wash with mine.

      • Even when I used it with my Banshee and Zaku Sniper, I noticed Future is sensitive to water after seeing marks left behind when I was applying waterslides. It’s possible that I just need to let it cure for much longer (a test spoon was rock-hard after I checked on it a few weeks later), but I don’t have time for that.

I mostly airbrush it and it works with no fuss. But, I tested brushing it on yesterday and there was no difference to the protection: still tough and ready to handle in 15-20 min. It didn’t crust up the brush too, though I still swished it in water after each application.

        • Hmm, I need to see if I can find some of that stuff then. It’s a acrylic based from what I gather?

          • Yep, it’s an acrylic so it won’t eat through anything underneath. Give it a try, it’s good stuff. Doesn’t smell like anything too.

      • Whoops, forgot to mention that it requires no thinning. Good to go right out of the bottle. Just don’t shake it, haha.

        • That Draken E looks nice. Very cute. Too bad you ran into some problems.

          • Thanks, man. I did enjoy painting it and it was great to see how VMC Natural Steel looked, since I wanted to use it on the KA.

That is strange as I did not have that problem with future and water decal. The only kit with water decal I’ve done so far was the Cosmo Zero build with my friend’s son. But there was no base paint as it was just Future over the un-painted surface then water decal and a Mr. Color flat coat. It also held up against the Tamiya enamel panel accent. Will have to keep an eye on this on my current Cosmo Falcon build.

      • Same with me, never had issues with Future on unpainted surfaces. It didn’t dissolve or weaken or nothing. It seems to be only with painted surfaces, and mostly with Vallejo paints. I find it to be tough right away against anything that isn’t water, alcohol, and any mix of the two.

OK. that may be it. I’ve only used it on Lacquer painted surface. Guess we’ll find out this weekend. I’ll report back.

          • That’s interesting to say the least, not sure on myself using future… In the future, also I laughed my butt off earlier when I realized my mistake, my phone must have thought I was drunk when I typed out Dlinker lol
