Hey guys, started painting my models with enamel paints and it turned out really good. The only problem is that I dont know what topcoats I should use for the models because I need to panel line the models and apply a finishing flat coat over the enamel paints but only have Vallejo Acrylic top coats (because i’ve used tamiya acrylics previously). Im using the tamiya enamel paints if that helps anyone. I heard that acrylic over enamel doesnt work too well. Any suggestions on brands? Thanks in advance
Acrylic is fine over enamel. But don’t make the mistake I did! Enamel takes a while to cure, even if it’s dry it’s still curing. Once you put a protective layer over it, like an acrylic coat, you’ll slow down the curing process even further.
Actually if you are moving onto stinkier paints, go straight to lacquers. Both require ventilation and respirators, so use the tough stuff 😉 I haven’t looked back since using mr color.
Mr color dries quickly and cures in less than 24 hours. I’ve managed to paint a hguc banshee in one weekend, that’s priming, base coat, post shading and highlighting, and clear coating. And I’m a pretty slow painter
Yeah, I saw the banshee and both the FA and your Banshee look really nice man. I was originally thinking of switching to lacquers when I made my move from primarily acrylics but don’t have a spray booth of any type and only have a 3m dust mask, one of the cloth ones that have like a cage in the center. So I just have to spray outside hoping that the dust mask will help keep me somewhat safe.
Now im really considering a spray booth and a more substantial breathing apparatus. I was thinking of buying one of those portable spray booths but read somewhere that flammable paints shouldnt be used so not quite sure if that’s the way to go
Beldin has hit the proverbial nail on the head. Alway wait for the curing time. Got any pics? would love to see what you were working on 🙂
Thanks heaps for the quick responses guys. Unfortunately, its night time and there’s quite poor lighting conditions at my desk so the pictures I took turned out pretty poorly. Im definitely no where near as good as you guys @bloodnut38, @beldin but i’ll post some pictures when I finish. But im working on the Wing Gundam EW at the moment.
So would the two Vallejo top coats (the matte and gloss) work on top of the Tamiya enamels?
should be fine since both are water based 🙂
