May not be a new idea, and will probably fall on deaf ears.

The amount of time the experienced builders put into preparing gunplas for painting is insane. Not just gunplas, but any model kits. Even vehicle kits. The larger scale are easier to prep since color separation is built in. Just cut, sand, putty, sand, wash, dry, clip, prime, paint, seal, line & seal. However, the building process has been modernized. I’m not talking about customizing (extra time) & building (easy).

We study the instructions to see how we’re preparing the kit for painting. i.e. head, torso & limps pull right off joints, so build them first in advance, & build weapons & putty them. Many kits, for example, have un-detaching limps so you either paint first without putty (hundreds of parts drying on top of the shelves/tables) or build first with putty. (youtube has some clips on how to modify a gunpla before painting). The average modern HG has about a hundred parts. More parts in larger scales.

Masking in some cases is not an option. Usually, the joints must be built, puttied, sanded & painted first. At the very least, painted first. Then, build the limps & repeat the whole process. The best way would be detaching joints & limps that can be built first. Bandai is getting there, but not there yet. Other manufacturers are playing catchup with Bandai.

In the end, this idea will fall on deaf ears. It all boils down to the bottom line. If they increase the engineering time & sell the products for about the same prices, they won’t see a benefit to them.

If they do try, add a new line called BG (builder’s grade). No need to make every past kit available. Just some well known protagonists & antagonists. They could very well just modify the existing engineering a bit. Like the joint sprues/trees. Rehash the same other parts (head, torso, weapons, accessories, stickers/decals). Slap a BG on the box. Up the price a tiny bit.

    • Have you heard All Gundam Project? It might be not as much as you want, but close to it. It comes with separated joints as you finished building the kit, so you can dissemble it, paint it per part, and joinbit all together after finishing up. That is what I did with almost all of new released kit.
