for a metallic paint you want to lay down a gloss black before the actual metallic color you want, whether or not you use a primer before this I suppose could be considered optional but I’d do it. When working with gloss paints you can’t really do touch up work, it shows too much, and if you’re doing metallic you’re probably not going to want to flatten it out kinda defeats the purpose so you want to be as sure as possible that the paint you put down is going to stay there. The thing with metallic paints is they’re slightly transparent which means the color behind it will effect the final result. I’ve noticed that Tamiya metallic sprays actually have labels sometimes even in English that tell you to lay down a gloss black coat first for better results. How I do it usually is a white primer followed by metallic black followed by the metallic color I want, then a gloss topcoat.
