Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time Takes 1st On Opening Weekend

“Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” (or “Shin Evangelion” in Japan) was finally released in Japan on March 8th and made #1 in Japanese theaters in terms of sales and attendance for the March 13-14 weekend.

Release Date Woes

Though it’s unusual for films in Japan to open on a Monday, it’s clear why: the Kanto-area state of emergency was set to be lifted on March 7th (before it was extended at the last minute to March 31st). The film had already been postponed twice due to the pandemic & states of emergency here in Japan; this time, the release date was maintained.

不定 – Indefinitely Postponed

That said, “opening weekend” for the new Evangelion film didn’t come until several days after opening day, and so news reports regarding the film’s performance came a little later after release than usual.

Opening Weekend Results

As reported by Yahoo! News Japan, “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” saw 761,000 moviegoers on March 13-14, and 1.177 billion yen in revenue during the same period. That’s 10.8 million USD / 9 million Euros!

Opening Week Results (First 7 Days)

As for the first full week of its release, about 2.19 million people saw “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” in theaters. As for revenue, it grossed 3.3 billion yen at the same time (30 million USD / 35 million Euros).

Despite several metropolitan areas still being under a state of emergency for the pandemic, it seems the hype is real: this final film is set to beat the last film, “Evangelion: 3.3 You Can (Not) Redo”, which grossed 5.3 billion yen total. So far, in its first week, “Thrice Upon a Time” had 133% more attendees and grossed more by 145% than the previous film during its first week.

With already great numbers, and the Japanese government looking to dissolve the remaining state of emergency this week, things are looking very good for the final Evangelion film.

As an aside, the recent “Demon Slayer” film that has dominated box offices, remained in the top 3 on weekly charts for 22 straight weeks; with Evangelion taking 1st, now, “Demon Slayer” has dipped to 4th place. The numbers since then? — 28 million viewers and 40 billion yen (376 million USD / 306 million Euros).

  1. How can I legally watch any of the rebuild movies with an english dub in Europe 😥😭

Blu rays are not available or ridiculously expensive, streaming platforms outside japan do not have them.

    • Hi! Unfortunately, this movie is only showing in Japanese theaters — there is no digital or home version available right now. On top of that, there have been no announcements for any overseas releases; these announcements have usually come a few months after the Evangelion films’ Japanese releases. We really hope for news soon, most of our foreign staff want to watch it with subtitles, so we’re all in the same boat! Fingers crossed!
