REX Black Ver. is a reprint version of Metal Gear Rex by Kotobukiya. Metal Gear Ray was a lot of fun to build, so let’s see how this looks, now in basic black.
Though they don’t always photograph that well, the boxes will always catch your eye if you see them on a shelf.
The box is even bigger than a big MG box! The price of it is 8200 JPY, but you can get 20% off at HLJ.com!
When you crack open the box, a whole bunch of plates will pop out, which as you may expect are mostly black.
The manual gives us a less shiny look at the design. Very cool looking.
Inside the manual there are pictures of a finished kit, with the plates laid out as you’d expect on the right.
Less white space all around the directions indicate it may take a while to build.
The color guide.
With a couple pages set aside for the water slides, if you want to Katoki it up, and add a little bit of color.
Here are the plates in alphabetical order.
‘O’ne of these plates is not like the other. Besides the couple clear plates, O is going to have a lot of work to do to make this guy look colorful.
There are 4 little figures, and a big chunk of water slides.
Some final thoughts. Though the Rex is the first in the line, I haven’t put it together yet. But the Metal Gear Ray really impressed me with both its mobility and stability. We’ve seen here Kotobukiya kits consistently improve over time, so I wonder how this will fit in to the grand scheme of things, especially as it looks like a slightly complicated build. Plus, how does it look in all black (plus a little brown and gold)? Let’s find out together in part 2! Thanks for checking this out.
